Is there a merit badge for resilience?

The emotional outpouring from local Boy Scouts, scouting leaders and scouting alumni should make Maine's Pine Tree Council think twice before selling Camp Gustin in Sabattus.

It's a matter of tradition, certainly, as well as honoring the wishes of the late Charles Gustin, who donated the 100 acres around Loon Pond for future use by Scouts in Maine. The council's poor fiscal projections, however, have it trying to raise about $350,000 in revenue from its sale.

This seems a sudden decision by an organization that, only four years ago, held a $4 million capital campaign to refurbish infrastructure at certain camps and build a large new administrative building on 2 acres of gifted property on Johnson Road in Portland. (Disclosure: the Sun Journal donated $1,000 to that campaign.)

While it is possible that the recession is necessitating the sale of Camp Gustin, the local Scouts and scouting leaders who are the lifeblood of the Pine Tree Council should not be told this decision is final without it being proven all other avenues are being explored for savings.

The Pine Tree Council has, according to its tax returns, operated at a minimal loss for several years; is there something about this year's deficit that makes a sudden infusion of capital necessary? Council officials also said there is the matter of $1 million in debt that must be addressed.

It seems ironic, and somewhat worrisome, that the plan for eradicating debt is selling a property the council, and its generations of Scouts, had received for next to nothing, as a legacy.

Cutting services — whether one is scouting, or governing — is always the last resort. Our local public leaders always leave no stone unturned when balancing budgets. The Scouts who now enjoy, and the legions who have enjoyed, Camp Gustin should ask the same of its leadership.

Scouting is all about building character, after all. This crisis is a prime opportunity to do so.

This really shouldn't be a

This really shouldn't be a forum to get into a debate, however i must say Tron is completely out of line! I with many other wonderful leaders run a pack of cub scouts and we do both as a pack and as individual dens many service projects each year including:
*Picking up litter at Montello school
*Creating and sending a Holiday Carols video to troops over seas
*Scouting for food
*Marching in the Memorial Day Parade and hoisting the flag that was sent to us by some of the troops who received the holiday video (which had a very low turn out by every day citizens (were you there to honor our veterans)
*Donated holiday gifts to the families at the Abused Womans advocacy project
*there is a national push to plant trees on Arbor Day 2010

So there are just a few examples and no you may not see it, however the practice of being a good citizen and doing good deeds is to do it without recognition, so yes you wont see it because we go about our good deeds silently.

Have you done your good turn daily yet?

tron, please provide one

tron, please provide one example where we "openly teach discrimination and intolerance to people unlike themselves"....I know you can't come up with any real examples other than what you "think" is happening....Your neice and godchild teaches first aid and family citizenship, for example - do you have a problem with that?

To tron, today 17 boys and 5

To tron, today 17 boys and 5 adult, including my sons and I spent several hours raking, sweeping and general maintenance of the YWCA building on East Avenue. Last month we and many others from other units spent two entire weekends rebuilding trails and bridges at the Shaker Village in New Gloucester. In August we spent time in Lake Placid, NY area and performed a large land conservation project without being asked, just because they felt it was the right thing to do. Next month we will celebrate the success with another Eagle Scout whose project a few months ago was the demolition and insulation of a vestry hall at the new Gloucester Congregational CHurch which included 30 scouts, 12 leaders and 20 others who are friends of Scouts. At the district Eagle recognition banquet, our Troop was recognized with 3 of the 12 Eagles this year in the entire district.

But getting back to Camp GUstin:

Note: I can't find any

Note: I can't find any financial statements on the dysfunctional Council web page, but it's probably the usual story of a bloated staff and the Council Commissioners refusal to fire them. Close the council headquarters if they have to, but they must balance their budget now.

The Pine Tree Council has a

The Pine Tree Council has a strong history in our state but quietly hid their financial problems and chose to operate at a massive deficit. They need to immediately make major cuts in their budget and get some new leadership. Also any sale of assets should benefit their capital accounts only, not their operating budget.

You don't see them doing

You don't see them doing good works because you're not looking for that. You're looking for something about them to bitch about. They "openly teach discrimination and intolerance to people unlike themselves"???? They don't need the Boy Scouts for that. They can earn enough about intolerance by reading your posts. It really pis%es you off that you and others like you haven't been able to get that organization to change their definition of "moral straightness" to meet your needs and expectations. Doesn't it, dumbass?

Personally I think this is

Personally I think this is just a ploy by the Scouts to increase their fundraising this year. Watch how all the publicity suddenly ignites contributions from the public and lo and behold Camp Gustin is saved. Give me a break. There was a time when Scouting taught, among other things, God, Country, family and basic human decency. Now you rarely see a scout doing "good deed" for the community or the people. And they now openly teach discrimination and intolerance to people unlike themselves. They still have their name, which elicits fond memories, but as the public comes to fully realize what they've become, they will have more troubles in the future.
