Maine casino group collects 99K signatures

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A group that wants to build a resort and casino in western Maine says it has collected 99,000 signatures seeking to put the proposal to a statewide vote.

Black Bear Entertainment LLC spokesman Peter Martin says the signatures were gathered in just 20 days. He said residents have expressed support for an Oxford County casino because it would create jobs and boost state revenues.

If more than 55,000 signatures are certified, Mainers could vote on the matter in November 2010.

The antigambling group Casinos NO! criticized organizers for paying a California firm $170,000 to collect the signatures. Martin said most petition drives in recent years have used paid signature collectors.

I agree. But it seems like

I agree. But it seems like this is good timing for this to go through. The big thing is people in Oxford want it. That is 90% of the battle. I got a laugh out of Bailey on TV last night. He looked like he hadn't slept in a week. Maybe he is working on the side collecting signatures for these people. He probably knows the end is near for NO! He seemed like he didn't know what to say. Just kept mumbling and fidgeting. It's hard to say it doesn't work when there are 500 people working in Bangor that would probably be on food stamps if it weren't for the casino there. What part of that doesn't he get?

Let's hope they do it right

Let's hope they do it right this time and get this passed. I'm tired of driving 4 hours to Foxwoods.
