Save Camp Gustin

There needs to be no mention of the value of Camp Gustin or the need to save it. That is established and agreed upon.

Many wish to fight the Pine Tree Council and use public pressure to embarrass it into not selling. I think that would be a grave mistake. It appears members of the council do not share other people's values or priorities. In a few years, they could decide again to sell, with no notice to prevent an outcry. Camp Gustin needs to be taken out of the council's hands; secure for now and into the future.

Raising $350,000 or more would involve sacrifice and hard work, and even though that money could be spent in other areas, nothing is more worthy than saving Camp Gustin.

I propose and advocate for a committee to form a nonprofit organization to solicit tax-deductible funds to purchase Camp Gustin to preserve it in perpetuity, and to establish deed restrictions to strip development value from the camp.

Perhaps, ownership of the land might mean that no deed restrictions would be needed. If Charles Gustin had imposed restrictions when he donated the place, this letter would not have been written. No organization stays the same through time.

My hope is that someone or

My hope is that someone or some company/group will have the means to step forward and say "we will pay the purchase price for the sole purpose of having a deed restriction added to this parcel of land". There are good hearted people out there that do not want to see this wonderful place go away; we just need to find the right resources.

There are a few things to keep in mind, if a group purchases this land, they will also be saying yes to continued financial support to help pay the taxes, the insurance and yes, the maintenance. If this is taken over by a group other than Pine Tree Council, will some of the people who do the maintenance for free or very little, continue to do so. This is a big undertaking; the research needs to be done so that when and if a group is brought together, everyone will understand 100% what their participation means. Taking it out of the hands of PTC may not be the best answer. Emotions are running high (with every right) but before making any huge decisions we must understand all aspects.

Simply having a fundraiser

Simply having a fundraiser would not solve the problem. We could band together and give council thousands of dollars but that does not guarentee what could happen in the future...If it were to be purchased by a non-profit it could become a resource for ALL youth, whether they be school groups, church groups, or any others. The property would not be limited to Scouts, but to anyone believing in a love of the outdoors.

For Pete's sake why not have

For Pete's sake why not have a fundraiser for the scouts, period. Why go through this charade of buying a piece of scout land to give it back to the scouts. This is really getting ridiculous.

Because some of our boys are

Because some of our boys are already doing the best they can with fundraisers to help pay for camp and other activities they enjoy doing. We can not nor should we expect the boys to help pay off a debt they did not create!

Because fundraising for the

Because fundraising for the Scouts to cover the deficit is like raising taxes for the state to cover their's- it doesn't solve the underlying problems of costly, inefficient overhead and poor fiscal management.

Then change the management.

Then change the management. Why is that such a difficult concept for people to grasp, both on the scouting level and if you believe the same is true, on the state level.

Because we don't vote for

Because we don't vote for top leadership in scouting like we do in government.
