When teaching my children to

When teaching my children to drive I instructed them to never swerve to avoid any animal smaller than a deer/moose. The costs can be great including loss of life. And the pet owner has no responsibility towards your costs.

Although swerving to avoid

Although swerving to avoid hitting somebody's pet may be your first instinct, and a noble one, you've really got to put into the back of your mind that not killing or injuring yourself is a higher priority than preventing nature (survival of the fittest) from taking its course.

I hate to say it but after

I hate to say it but after seeing the damage to the truck, I'd have hit the cat.
I wonder what kind of deductibles Ms. Toothaker carries on her truck ... hopefully she doesn't have liability only, or else that's one expensive, live cat.

Stupidity killed the cat. Curiosity just got it stuck a while.
