Man charged in Sweden standoff

SWEDEN — A 41-year-old man is free on bail after being charged in connection with a standoff at his home last month.

Timothy Kelly of Waterford Road was arrested Saturday morning and charged with aggravated assault and terrorizing. Capt. Ernest Martin, administrator of the Oxford County Jail, said Tuesday that Kelly was released on a $50,000 surety on Saturday afternoon.

According to an affidavit by Deputy Danielle Welch of the Oxford County Sheriff's Office, Kelly is accused of assaulting 21-year-old Justin Smith at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall on Smarts Hill Road in Lovell on the evening of Oct. 30. Smith said Kelly had asked to meet at the hall to discuss issues between Smith and Kelly's family, and that Kelly was intoxicated at the time.

Smith said Kelly started punching him in the head and face, then tackled him and punched and kicked him while he was on the ground. Smith also said Kelly threatened to kill him. Welch said that Smith's injuries included two broken teeth, scrapes and contusions, and some cuts that needed stitches.

Kelly later returned to his home, and police set up a perimeter around it after he called his daughter and said he would not leave. Welch said police were aware of several weapons in the house, including a Mac 10 and AK-47. The perimeter was withdrawn after the District Attorney's Office made the decision to not pursue charges at that time.

Welch requested an arrest warrant for Kelly on Friday.
