Sumner to seek grant for new roof

SUMNER — Selectman Mark Silber said he will be looking into getting grant money to put a new roof on the Municipal Building.

According to the board, the 20-year-old shingles are in bad condition and are warping and coming off with heavy snows.

A program administered by the Maine Public Utilities Commission is offering grants where improvements in energy efficiency are needed. Added insulation with a new roof would make the town office more energy efficient.

In other business before the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday night, the state is asking for feedback on the Dig Safe program. Road Commissioner Jim Keach said all the phone lines are buried beside the roads. "Whenever I have to put in a culvert, install a new post for a sign or grade a road, I have to call Dig Safe," Keach said.

Keach said the biggest problem he has with Dig Safe is maintaining the marks for digging culverts. "If it rains the day they mark the road, the marks will likely be washed away and then we have to remark the area before anyone can dig."

Keach said he has on occasions dug up lines and it was never clear who he was supposed to contact. "I kept calling the phone company on one occasion not knowing it was the Public Utilities (Commission) I was to call."

Town Clerk Susan Runes said that often the maps or diagrams of the lines are not clearly marked and this presents a problem as well.

Runes also reported that 30 percent of the taxes were already in. Residents have until the end of January before interest begins on the bills.

Silber and Selectman Mary Ann Haxton will be visiting two sites on Redding Road to reconsider property valuations.

The dog and cat rabies vaccination clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Fire Station.
