Jay man accused of seriously injuring woman
JAY — A Jay man is being held on $25,000 cash bail after police say he assaulted a woman at his home and threatened her with a handgun late Tuesday afternoon.
The woman received serious facial injuries and was taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, police Chief Larry White Sr. said Wednesday.
David Belanger, 53, of Franklin Road was arrested on charges of felony aggravated assault, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and a misdemeanor charge of obstructing the report of a crime,White said. Belanger turned himself in to police 30 to 40 minutes after they started looking for him, White said, and is being held at the Franklin County jail in Farmington.
Jay and Livermore Falls police, and Franklin County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 4:56 p.m. report that Belanger had assaulted a woman at his residence, threatened her with a firearm, pulled a telephone from the wall and fled the scene in his vehicle, possibly with a weapon, White said.
White said he and other officers searched for Belanger, while Jay Sgt. Troy Young secured the house. A few minutes later the Franklin County Sheriff's Department Communications Center received a cell phone call from Belanger's friend that he had Belanger with him in his vehicle, he was not armed and he was going to turn himself in at the Jay Police Department, White said.
Belanger met Jay officer Nick Gulliver in the parking lot of the station, White said.
Belanger is scheduled to appear at a Farmington court Dec. 18.
