Ambience would be changed

The western mountains of Maine are a wonderful place, providing the opportunity for hiking, canoeing, fishing and communing with the beauties of nature.

As a resident of crowded New Jersey, I have always looked forward to the peace and quiet that our summer vacations at Rangeley Lake provided. I remember how that peace and quiet was shattered many years ago by the terrain hugging flights of B-47 bombers and the tree top flights of several military fighter planes over the lake.

Were such low level flights to be resumed, the entire ambiance of the region would be changed and I, and probably many others, would be forced, with great regret, to seek a different place to enjoy the beauties of the natural world.

I urge Maine residents not to allow the resumption of low level flights over the region.

Most of these comments have

Most of these comments have nothing to do with the subject of the letter at the top of the page, low level military training flights. Training that best simulates actual combat conditions is very important to an effective military. If the generals in charge feel that these flights are necessary I think they should happen. The animals will get used to them and the few seconds of noise won't ruin anybody's peaceful vacation.

Dressing up for a night out

Dressing up for a night out whether a child for Christmas, a teen for the prom, a senior for the symphony or anything in the continuum one feels better about themselves; a complete transformation of attitude takes place and is evident in language, carriage and mannerisms. Put on a suit and you naturally conduct yourself more professionally. Put on rags and the language deterriorates to an embarassing level as does behavior. People do things dressed at their worst they would never consider any other time. Our parents had very good reasons for restricting what we wore in our youth. They knew how we attired ourselves goes a long way in defining who we are and how we behave. They also put limits on who we associated with and where. I agree with the others, Maine is in a terrible state and soes nothing but further bring down Maine people and Maine's economy. This is something each and eveyone of us has power to change ourselves without government, grants, committees, dollars, just good old fashion personal responsibility and action.
If we could only return to common sense...

What would really change the

What would really change the amiance there is the "Call To Proyers" four times a day our Muslim enemies would force upon us, should they become victorious. As for myself, I prefer the sound of jets.

The proper term is "Call to Prayers" you old coot. Making fun of their religious traditions really will endear them to us. No wonder they hate us.

I quite agree. Didn't New

I quite agree. Didn't New York just do something with this a few years age? A study that showed that picking up trash and taking pride in an area attracted business and tourists, increased tax revanues, contributed to public health and safety, and increased residents pride in themselves? Was it something about redeveloping Times Square?

It appears you are very happy where you are now. If I were that happy there I would stay there. The price of freedom is not cheap.

Before moving out of state

Before moving out of state in 1998, I was featured in a Sun Journal article on this very issue. At the time the low level flights reeked havoc with our flocks, chickens, ducks and geese. I certainly would not relish there return for the sack of the farmers whose livestock is so adversely effected.

I would like to take the opportunity to point out what I consider a much more immediate cause for concern, a threat to public health and safety and deterent to economic development. Since returning to Maine to serve as a community service volunteer for one year before resuming my studies, I have been appaulled by the conditions of properties. many homes and business even occupied or operating look abandonded with grass and shrubbery un touched for years. The buildings can be described as no better than derelict. Animal feases littering sidewalks and front yards is common place. Have you no respect, no pride, no sense of common decentcy? The litter and general filth is beyond description. Conditions are ripe for water contamination and disease. Peoplle you are not living in the 1700s when sewers ran in open gutters along the street though it is getting close.

When receiving instruction on going to a job interview, prospects are taught to dress, speak and generally present themselves properly and in the best light possible so as to leave the interviewer with the best possible impression. The impression that is given with how the homes, businesses, communities, and roadways of Maine are being maintained is not a good one to say the least. People do not want to spend there vacation dodging your dogs... left on the sidewalk or looking at slumbs. People do not want to come here with there families and businesses and live amongst this. It is not necessary for Maine to be this way. Mow and rake the yard, cleaning up the trash. Apply a coat of paint and wash the windows. And by all means clean up after your dog.
