PITTSBURGH — Niclas Bergfors had a goal and two assists and
the New Jersey Devils closed within a victory of tying the NHL record
of 10 consecutive road victories to start a season, beating the
slumping Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 on Thursday night.
Zach Parise
added a goal and an assist, Travis Zajac had three assists and Martin
Brodeur made 25 saves as New Jersey improved to 9-0 on the road. The
Devils can tie the road streak record Monday in Philadelphia.
New Jersey won its seventh in a row overall and, with 26 points, tied idle Washington for first place in the Eastern Conference.
Penguins
captain Sidney Crosby ended a career-long five-game scoreless streak by
assisting on Ruslan Fedotenko's goal in the first period, but still had
a frustrating night as the Stanley Cup champions lost their fourth in a
row.
With the Penguins down 3-1 midway through the third, Crosby
put a backhander off the left post and a wrist shot off the right post
seconds apart during a failed power play - Pittsburgh's 25th in a row.
Crosby then trimmed more than a minute off the power play by taking a
holding penalty.
Pittsburgh hasn't scored with the man advantage
since star Evgeni Malkin left the lineup Oct. 29 with a strained right
shoulder. Last season's scoring champion took part in the pregame skate
and could return as early as Saturday night against Boston.
Red Wings 3, Canucks 1
DETROIT — Henrik Zetterberg scored midway through the third period and Jimmy Howard made 31 saves, giving the Detroit Red Wings a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night.
Zetterberg took a long pass from Brad Stuart, slipped past the defense and lifted a backhander over Roberto Luongo's left shoulder for his team-leading 17th point.
Luongo made 26 saves in his first start since facing Detroit on Oct. 27 when he aggravated a broken rib. After Luongo was pulled for an extra skater, Niklas Kronwall cleared the puck from the Red Wings' end, got a fortunate bounce off the boards and it trickled into the empty net.
Tomas Holmstrom gave Detroit a 1-0 lead late in the first period. Vancouver's Mason Raymond tied it in the second.
Detroit won its third consecutive home game and is 5-1 after a .500 start.
The Canucks have lost three in row and close a five-game road trip Saturday at Colorado.
Flyers 5, Senators 1
PHILADELPHIA — Ray Emery made 22 saves in his first start against his former team, and Danny Briere scored two goals to help Philadelphia beat Ottawa.
Blair Betts, James Van Riemsdyk and Darroll Powe also scored for the Flyers in their fifth straight victory. Mike Fisher scored for Ottawa.
Emery was cut loose by Ottawa after the 2007-08 season, the year after he led the Senators to the Stanley Cup finals. He played in Russia last season.
Thrashers 5, Rangers 3
NEW YORK — Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and two assists in his first game back from a foot injury, and Rich Peverley also had a goal and two assists for Atlanta.
Kovalchuk missed the previous six games.
Evander Kane added a goal and assist, and Colby Armstrong and Maxim Afinogenov also scored in Atlanta's fourth win in six games. Artem Anisimov, Marian Gaborik and Brian Boyle scored for New York.
