Judge not, says the Bible

This is in response to the letter from Reagan Simmons (Nov. 11). I thank her for writing. I agree with everything she said.

I am bisexual. I am also a born-again Christian. In my Bible, it says judge not and you shall not be judged.

There are a lot of closed-minded people living in Maine. I feel ashamed to live here. The good Lord loves us all, no matter what gender we are.

Let freedom ring, so people can marry whomever they want. But it doesn't look like there is freedom in the state of Maine. The nation was founded on freedom.

Simmons hit the nail on the head.

We need to attract more

We need to attract more religious conservatives who can tell the difference between the homosexuals "pretend" marriage, that can never be consummated, and a real marriage between a man and a woman. Also thanks to everyone in the Lewiston/Auburn region that voted Yes on Question 1.

This vote was never about

This vote was never about denying gays/lesbians civil rights. Those were guaranteed some years ago in another referendum. I am happy to say I voted in favor of guaranteeing those rights. What this referendum was about was the gays/lesbians and legislature forcing a redefinition of the word marriage. I voted Yes on 1 to prevent that. Most of us Yes on 1 voters were in favor of, if necessary, updating the laws governing Civil Unions, so that those gays/lesbians who are united with each other under those laws, receive the same benefits as those of us who are married. Why can't you people understand and accept that?

Pirate, no it doesn't. But

Pirate, no it doesn't. But some were. Some still are like the birther movement.
But the gay marriage debate over the last year showed that there was no rational reason to vote yes. And when challenged the Yeson1 folks could not supply a reason. The advertising was designed solely to inflame anti-gay hostility. ProConserv and other writers in various forums explicitly stated any number of false and irrational anti-gay sterotypes. In that case, the overwhelming majority of Yes on 1 voters are and were bigots. Some because of institutional bigotry, some religious bigotry, and some personal bigotry. In the end though its just bigotry.

If you were to quote your

If you were to quote your Bible correctly, Ms. Gross, you would have stated that the snippet you put down states that one should "not judge lest ye be judged." And if you were to have continued along in the context of the verse, you would see that you are able to judge another. The only stipulation is that you should expect the same measure of judgment will be levied against you. So, if you are going to quote, please quote correctly.

You also stated that freedom doesn't ring. You are incorrect; freedom does ring. You are always free to move to another state, such as Massachusetts, if you continued to be too ashamed to live here. People are allowed to "marry whomever they want" there.

Well Auburn Patriot, I dont

Well Auburn Patriot, I dont need to use the bible as a weapon, But if you really feel that ashamed of the people in the state of Maine then why are you living here? And it was not only or just Amymarie who "deny"(as you put it) others the right to live as they wish it was THE STATE OF MAINE whom voted against the gay marriage. Not only gay marriage but to keep gay marriage out of our school systems. Little children dont to learn about stuff like that. And what about the rights and wishes of parents whom have children in school? People like YOU dont stop and think about that do you?

The parrot wants to know if that means that if a person didn't vote for obama, they are a racist?

no matter religion or

no matter religion or not-judging people is not our place. we all have done something in our lives that many would look down upon. we are no better than the other. someway/somehow/sometime we will all experience similar situations or events in life that bring about the same emotions/thoughts/feelings (like trauma or a loved one dying or maybe even getting the blues). we are human. i'm afraid dawn, that many have become lost in the present day and so self-absorbed without taking a breather and seeing whats going on around them-could be the reason for their lack of compassion for their neighbors. when/if someone judges me-i've learned to not let it bother me. i know who i am and what i am about-what i have gone through in life and what i have learned to help me be a better me. judge all you want... but from experience i've learned that 'misery loves company' and i don't have time for that in my life-i'm not sorry that i can not join you. there will be a day-hopefully soon-where we are all treated as equals.
