Colisee landed convention for Lewiston, local Dems say

LEWISTON — Local city and Democratic officials gathered before the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston on Wednesday morning to formally announce that the Maine Democratic Convention would be hosted by the city for the first time in 25 years.

Scott Taylor

The Maine Democratic Party announced Wednesday morning that Lewiston will host its 2010 state convention in May. The Androscoggin Bank Colisee, and the improvements made over the 25 years since the convention was last held in Lewiston, were said to be major reasons behind the decision, according to party officials.

Elaine Makas, an Androscoggin County commissioner who has been active in state Democratic party politics for many years, said though she and others promoted Lewiston to the Democrats, it was the Colisee that sold the deal.

"People thought the Colisee still had a dirt parking lot," Makas said. "When I convinced (party officials) to come down and visit, they were really impressed."

Also speaking at the press conference were Lewiston Mayor Larry Gilbert; Chip Morrison, president of the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce; Ted Small, the Androscoggin County Democratic Committee chairman; Ed Hill, the Lewiston Democratic City Committee chairman; and Mike Cain, son of Colisee owner Jim Cain.

Morrison said the event, which is scheduled for May 21 and 22, is expected to attract about 2,000 people and could result in an economic boost of up to $1 million.

"It's great people and great work ethic," Gilbert said of how Lewiston attracted the convention. He encouraged Maine Republicans and Green Independents to consider holding their conventions in Lewiston.

Arden Manning, the executive director of the Maine Democratic Party, said Lewiston will be "crucial" for Democratic success in 2010.

"Lewiston is in many ways the heart of the Democratic Party in Maine," he said in a written statement.

As a conservative that votes

As a conservative that votes the person “not the party” I hope the event does well. My only concern is that the “Democrat Elect” is anyone other than the three front runners Richardson, Rowe or McGowan. Maine Democrats can do much better for economics than Richardson head of DECD~ the co-pilot of the sinking SS Maine. Rowe has proven his callus indifference to a dieing mothers need for closure when he refused to help in closing out a decades old case. McGowan; well lets just say he’s got some questionable baggage that shouldn’t have access to a governor.

I hope the event is prosperous for surround shops, networks new business opportunities and leads to other possible candidates….. PLEASE!!!!!!!

It should have read,

It should have read, "Lewiston HAD a great work ethic". I grew up and still live in the
downtown area and it seems like I am one of the very few who work in my
neighborhood. My parents and their generation had the great work ethic.

It's about time. Lewiston

It's about time. Lewiston voters supply 4 or 5 certain votes for Democrat "programs" every two years. It will be good that the true believers will be spreading their cash around the Twin Cities.
