Turnpike plan making the rounds

AUBURN — A new version of the Maine Turnpike Authority's plans for the next 10 years will be unveiled at a series of public hearings next month.

The authority has scheduled meetings in towns from Gardiner to Saco to discuss the plan, including a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Auburn Hall.

Copies of the plan will be available at the meetings. They're also available for download from the authority's Web site, www.maineturnpike.com.

Locally, the plan calls for maintenance work at Lewiston-Auburn's two interchanges, exits 75 and 80, as well as regular road maintenance and bridge work between them.

The plan says a proposed downtown interchange, midway between the two exits, isn't necessary based on traffic volume. Local officials and business leaders have been urging the authority for decades to build a new downtown connector.

Proposals so far have focused on Route 136 in Auburn and River Road in Lewiston, with a new bridge between Lewiston and Auburn south of South Bridge and north of the new interchange.
