AUBURN — Robert Bruce Adkins, 81, a life-long resident of Auburn, died early Sunday morning at his home.

The son of Oscar and Gladys (Bubier) Adkins, Robert was born Sept. 6, 1928. He was raised in Auburn, where he graduated from Edward Little High School.

He married the former Leona Calden on Sept.6, 1948, and they raised their family in their home on Stevens Mills Road. Robert worked at Macomber's Dairy, Hemond's Dairy, owned the Top Hat Restaurant. For the last 10 years he worked at his son's business, Twin City Dental Laboratory.

He enjoyed the time he spent with his family, Sunday dinners, fishing at the camp, traveling with his special friend Irene Fraser, playing cards and horseshoes, snowmobiling, watching his favorite teams on the television, and visiting with the good friends he had made over the years.

He is survived by three sons and their families, Michael Adkins (Linda) of Monmouth, Allan Adkins (Sandy) of West Virginia, and Blane Adkins (Bernie) of Texas; grandchildren, Eric Adkins (Leah), Ryan Adkins (Melissa), Michele Bosse (Steve), Jessica Hilton (Floyd), Joseph Adkins (Robyn), Lyssa Wyman, Brianna Adkins, Anastasia Adkins; and his great-grandchildren, Ethan, Trevor, Alexander, Michael, Abigail, Grayson and Michaela. He is also survived by his companion, Irene.

He was predeceased by his wife, Leona, in 2003; his brother, Harold Adkins; sisters, Hazel Stevens, Edith Macomber and Frances Davis.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staffs of the local dental practices, to whom he made local dental deliveries and became his friends. Special thanks as well to his caring neighbors, who helped him when they could. Robert was fortunate to have had some wonderful caregivers during this past year. We especially want to thank those staff members of Central Maine Medical Center and D'Youville Pavilion.
