1925 - 2009

AUBURN — Howard L. Woodward, 83, of 654 Brighton Hill Road, Minot, passed away early Saturday evening Nov. 14, at the Hospice House with family at his side.

He was born in Auburn on Dec. 30, 1925, a son of John and Vella D. (Ladd) Woodward. He was educated in local schools and graduated from Leavitt Institute in 1948. He was a military veteran, having served his country in the Navy during World War II.

Following his military service, he first owned and operated Woodward & Cox Amoco in Auburn. He later worked many years as a farmer, raising both chickens and cows until his retirement. During those farming years, he also owned and operated a grocery store in Naples known as Naples Market.

He was first married in 1947 to Thelma Whiting, who predeceased him in 1981. On Nov. 16, 1993, he married Lois Sturtevant Wallingford.

He was an active member of Grace Fellowship Church in Oxford. His civic organization memberships included more than 50 years in the Masons, longtime member of Tranquil Lodge # 29 AF & AM, and Pine Cone Chapter # 26 Order of the Eastern Star. He was an active member in Demolay for many years and spent several of those years as a dad advisor.

Howard was a loving, devoted, and hard-working husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by family and friends.

He leaves his wife of 16 years, Lois Woodward of Minot; a daughter, Vella Flanagan and fiance, Todd Tisdale, of Augusta; a son, Ronald H. Woodward and wife, Angela, of Minot; five grandchildren, Ronald Spelman, Jacob Woodward, Amber Woodward, Nicole Woodward and Amy Lynne Flanagan; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Frannie, in December 1975; and by four brothers and sisters.
