Maine islands get power from wind

VINALHAVEN, Maine (AP) - Vinalhaven and neighboring North Haven are now getting their electric power from three windmills in what's billed as the largest community-owned wind farm on the East Coast.

The project was dedicated Tuesday by Gov. John Baldacci and other officials as a large crowd of island residents watched.

The Fox Islands Wind Project is expected to stabilize power supplies and lower energy costs for residents of the two islands, which are about 12 miles off the coast and have a combined year-round population of around 1,600.

Residents approved the project in a nearly unanimous vote in July 2008. Several other island and coastal communities are now looking at community wind power as a viable alternative to traditional energy sources.

Islanders are THE most

Islanders are THE most protective of their way of life of any group I have ever encountered. They would not embrass wind power if it threatened that way of life in the mosts miniscule in any way. Perhaps those in a panic around the state fired up by the uneducated and special interests will say, "Hey, wait a minute, the islanders are putting in wind farms on their islands. Maybe there is something wrong here with all this negative doomsday information we are being fed." We can only hope that the cool heads of the islanders will pass on to the rest of the people of Maine on this vital subject and people will get REAL information, as in the truth instead of propoganda.
If we could only return to common sense...
