One dead in turnpike crash

LEWISTON — One person was dead Thursday night after crashing a car in a construction zone on the Maine Turnpike and flipping the vehicle near Mile 81, police said.

A witness said the driver was traveling in excess of 100 mph with a police officer in pursuit in the northbound lane when the car crashed, flipped onto its roof and caught fire at about 7:30 p.m. The driver was not identified late Thursday night. The car bore Massachusetts license plates.

"It was unbelievable how fast he was going," said Jim Przytulski, whose vehicle was passed by the car seconds before it crashed. "He came flying around me on the right and just missed hitting me."

Przytulski said the car passed him just as the highway was narrowed to one lane by barriers near a bridge over Liberty Mutual on Lisbon Street. He said the car struck a guardrail on the right and bounced into one of the concrete barriers before sailing onto the bridge.

"He kind of careened off both sides," Przytulski said. "He was practically airborne."

The car, a four-door sedan, then flipped onto the side of the road at the northern end of the bridge. Almost immediately, flames and smoke rose from the wreckage.

"I could see two different areas where fire was coming from the engine," Przytulski said. "The trooper ran out and emptied the extinguisher he had with him, but it wasn't enough."

Przytulski said fire crews were there moments later. By then, the car was fully engulfed in flames.

"I could definitely see flames coming up over the firetruck," Przytulski said.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from at least a mile away.

Police and firefighters searched the grassy banks next to the highway on the chance that others in the car had been flung out in the wreck. No one was found.

A section of the northbound lane was closed to traffic as emergency crews fought the fire and police began an investigation. Traffic in the northbound lane backed up for miles with no second lane onto which to divert vehicles.

Two hours after the wreck, more than a half-dozen Maine State Police troopers were at the scene as the investigation got under way. There were no details about the pursuit. Przytulski said he believed the trooper had tried to stop the speeding vehicle a short time before it crashed.

Beneath the underpass, at Liberty Mutual, employees leaving work at about 8 p.m. said they saw something burning, followed by the arrival of fire and police vehicles. They had not been told there was a crash or that a person had been killed.

Przytulski said he was driving to his home in Winslow when he witnessed the crash and almost became a part of it. The car passed his with such velocity that Przytulski said he initially thought his vehicle had been struck.

He later checked for damage and found none.

"He was just inches from taking me out," he said. "I was just amazed at how fast he was going."

I agree. Cops shouldn't

I agree. Cops shouldn't bother chasing you when you're speeding 100+ mph on the turnpike, risking everyone else's life. They should just shoot your tires out on an open stretch with no other cars around and let physics do the job!

my acura will do 140 with

my acura will do 140 with ease. everyone acts like they dont ever speed. some people drive stupid. others just have that urge to go fast. maybe this guy was stupid. but not everyone is. and as far as the cops not knowing when to stop giving chase. i agree completely. this isnt los angelas. these cops around here dont have the training the cops on tv have. no way. they need to learn to give up. maybe theyll get their catch a different day sparing the lives of the ones they simply, cant catch. tell me the the cop chasing this guy "almost had him" or "was about to catch him".... doubt it. just scared the kid into running from him when really he had no chance of apprehension. theres that margin of speed where a cop just simply will never be able to catch up. esp when the speeding car passes at 100 and your sitting in the median. or turning around. give it up. your not super cop. and your car just simply doesnt have the horsepower to catch it.

ACURA FTW

This is completely and

This is completely and absolutely tragic. It shows that the police around here just do not know when to stop chase. Have you been on that section of the turnpike lately? There is one lane, with about only 2 feet of space on either side depending on the vehicle. They should have let this guy be. The cop should be jailed for murder.

Hey bigfish, he was already

Hey bigfish, he was already doing 100 mph BEFORE the trooper took chase. Now here's a thought, if the police turn their lights on you, stop. I believe that's how the law works. That would be the law that comes after the law that says don't speed.

Really?? So you think it is

Really?? So you think it is okay for a criminal to break the law?? What message does that send. Hey lets speed in a built up area or in a construction zone. I can get away with it because the Police shouldn't chase me it might be dangerous someone could get hurt....wow great idea you got there, jail the cop for murder....

The story in print had a

The story in print had a front-page headline with the word TRAGIC. There was nothing tragic in this event. There would have been if this dirtbag had taken some innocent bystanders with him.

I am just thankful that no

I am just thankful that no innocent people were killed during this, it seems that its usually not the "bad" guy who gets killed....usually the bad guy survives and the good family they hit dies.

I am quite certain I saw

I am quite certain I saw this car earlier on I-95 near Westbrook.. it passed me at a high rate of speed as I was entering from Westbrook. It came quite close to my car as well and I was thinking whomever was driving was acting in a reckless manner. It was ahead of me after that and eventually went out of sight. I came off the turnpike in Gray and continued on arriving in Auburn at about 7:30. I am sorry this is what happened.

Don't want to sound

Don't want to sound unsympathetic towards the deceased, but this is just another unsuspecting, but deserving recipient of a Darwin Award.
Thank God he didn't take anybody with him.
The parrot says he didn't realize an 04 Accura could still do 100 mph.
