County releases video of choking incident at jail

AUBURN — Androscoggin County officials released a video Friday that shows a former supervisor at the jail putting another corrections officer in a choke hold while on duty in August.

The tape shows Eric Hesketh, the officer who was choked, laying his head on his desk several times afterward. He reported that he felt nauseous and disoriented, and said the effects of the choking stayed with him for about half an hour.

The incident was cited, in part, for the recent firing of Cpl. Patrick Gorham by county commissioners. Gorham also was involved in another jail incident in which a corrections worker was duct-taped to his office chair at the jail, wheeled into an elevator and sent to a different floor.

Another supervisor, Sgt. Kevin Harmon, resigned after that September incident came to light. And corrections officer Robert Murphy, who was involved in the duct-taping prank, was suspended without pay and put on probation.

The Sun Journal filed a Freedom of Access Act request for video of both jail incidents, which were captured on closed-circuit security cameras. The videos were shown to the public during a commissioners' meeting earlier this month.

Has anybody considered what

Has anybody considered what Mr. Gorham did for employment before he worked for the Androscoggin County Jail? Well I have and I have found that Mr. Gorham is a former C.O. from Windham.. And guess what?? He was made to resign from Windham for sleeping on the job. And another thing.. The choke hold you see Mr. Gorham applying in this video is the chokehold that I previously stated was perfected on his ex-wife. So I stand by my initial perception of Mr. Gorham.. He is in fact the stereotypical wife beating pig that you read about.

I think any rational citizen

I think any rational citizen should support in depth, complete psychological examinations for all people in and thinking of enter the law enforcement field. We need sane people. We need people with integrity, common sense and empathy. These people are indicative of a lot of law enforcement officials, sorry excuses for human beings. We need the AG to investigate ALL law enforcement people and ascertain the mental sanity of all of them. We need this NOW!!

I think the Sunjournal

I think the Sunjournal should conduct the same examination on most of its bloggers including your dumb ass! Maybe then you would finally be silenced. You see Tron...this isn't news. This situation is absolutely absurd....who cares? No crime was committed because from what I'm reading there is no victim. No victim no crime. These are people fooling around and everyone appears to be a willing participant. Why this is creating the spectacle it is has become blows my mind. This is more the agenda of the Sunjournal's liberal editorial board pushing their hatred for county government and the Sheriff's outright refusal to admit he was wrong....that's it. I would recommend to most of the people involved, excluding the supervisor that voluntarily resigned, to sue for slander against the Sheriff's Office, Sunjournal, and WGME 13 for taking a nothing story and embarrassing officers who's careers are now ruined and reputations tarnished. These media outlets need to learn that creating drama during a slow news cycle is wrong and their ability to inflame and distort true facts is a violation of people's rights. I for one will protest by voting for another Sheriff candidate in the future, canceling my existing news paper subscription, and switching to WMTW 8 for my daily news.

Where I come from all those

Where I come from all those entering law enforcement have to take an MMPI. It's fairly foolproof and weeds out those who are mentally unstable. While no test is infallible it is a great indicator of who is fit to serve and who is not. I don't know if they have to do that up here but they also undergo psychological evaluation once they take the law enforcement training. I agree with you tron, something needs to be done in light of this stupidity that some just pass off as horseplay. I worked in law enforcement for over 20 years in my home state and yet I fear these officers of the law here. It's just plain scary.

Law enforcement is held to a

Law enforcement is held to a higher standard and while this may have been mutual horseplay it should not be condoned. These men are paid "professionals". While these people are goofing off, duct taping employees to chairs and putting others in a choke hold who is minding the store? What if there had been a fire, or an escape, a fight between inmates? The individual that was helpless while duct taped to a chair and the other being disoriented could have been placed in harms way with disastrous results. Luckily, none of that happened. Perhaps if they are that bored and have nothing better to do with their time then their supervisor should have been finding something for them to do. This was unprofessional and idiotic behavior among grown men and certainly a waste of payroll. They need to grow up and take their jobs seriously. Horseplay on your own time.

...He could of put an eye

...He could of put an eye out! Honestly what was there to see? They were out of cameras view, horsing around, as boys will...Was it right, was it wrong?..It wasnt professional, I agree, but seriously a matter that could of been handled in private... The squirrel and the crow in yesterdays paper made better news.

To all of you who are trying

To all of you who are trying to diminish the idiocy of this adolescent behavior, what would be your reaction if it had been a group of women nurses in a hospital? What if it had been a group of women teachers at your children's school?

I absolutely cannot believe

I absolutely cannot believe the number of apologists we have here today. These men, by definition, are sadists. And if they're doing this to each other, just imagine what they are doing to the prisoners. This cannot be condoned, we are a civilized society and this type of behavior is unacceptable for correction officials.

What a dull world this will

What a dull world this will become when we all have to kow-tow to PC mentality. These people were mutually fooling around during a slow period of time at work. Accept it, we all do (did) it and enjoyed working together.

To loose your job over

To loose your job over horseplay that was mutual is a little hard. As I see it he did not loose his job because of the choking incident he lost it as he was involved in two incidents that was unbecoming for a supervisor. His Sgt. escaped by resigning.. What is wrong with demoting opposed to firing him. The main culprit resigned.

ChoibleCete's picture

Are you serious? THIS is

Are you serious? THIS is the infamous "choking" incident we've heard so much about? This is nothing more than horseplay between 2 consenting parties. Professional? No. Something that should have been addressed with a "Hey, knock that crap off at work?" Yes. Terminated? Laughable. If this horseplay incident is the most serious thing wrong with the jail, I would sleep OK at night. Give me a break Sun-Journal! How about more investigation into some of the other issues that have been raised on these boards about the sheriff's department? Like an inept jail administration that protects certain staff people from much more serious breeches of conduct? Hmmm? How about some investigative journalism? I triple-dog dare you...

There is something

There is something definitely wrong with this type of behavior. It's immature, aggressive and potentially deadly. Normal people would never condone it. People with something a bit awry upstairs might --- but those are exactly the type of people who should NOT be in law enforcement. Humans are supposed to be evolving, not regressing.

Not a big deal at

Not a big deal at all...overblown by the anti-police group. Compared to what cops go through in routine training, this was nothing but an unfair exploitation of a minor incident. The lives of these men and their families have been tarnished, careers have been ended. Perhaps they too, will go "on the State" now. Congratulations on yellow journalism.

This place is sick!

This place is sick! Imagine what these guys are doing to the prisoners. Charges should be brought against everyone involved and they should be permanently barred from holding any law enforcement position in the state ever. These are grown men, not juveniles.
