First, CAIR is following our laws and our Constitution. Second, Christians have never faced discrimination in public schools since organized, state sponsored pray was removed. Third, obviously a problem exists between the super and the parents. Various court decisions require that governmental organizations make reasonable accommodations to allow people to exercise their Constitutional rights. Lastly, its not a question of Muslims becoming Americans. Its a question of Americans changing to accept new Americans and new Americans learning to live among us.
The racism, religious intolerance, and dowright bigotry in these comments unfortunately doesn't amaze, but it will give Lewiston a bad name.

Muslim advocacy group files complaint with Lewiston School Department
LEWISTON — A national Muslim civil rights organization has filed a formal request with the Lewiston School Department to allow a middle school student to pray on school property. The group also wants Lewiston to modify existing policy and provide "constitutionally protected religious accommodation," such as a designated prayer room.
The group has also requested the school department institute diversity training for school staff, and to ensure the middle-schooler won't face retaliation because of her request to pray at the Lewiston Middle School.
According to the Washington, D.C.,-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, seventh-grader Nasra Aden had been routinely "praying discreetly during her free time or lunch break in a corner of a school hallway." But, on Tuesday, CAIR asserts a teacher told Aden "never to pray on school property" after Aden was seen preparing to kneel in prayer in a corner of one of the hallways.
After Aden told her mother, Jamad Warsame, what happened, Warsame spoke with school Principal Maureen Lachappelle and asked the school to accommodate her daughter's desire to pray. According to CAIR, Warsame's request was rebuffed and she has been "forced to pick up her daughter every day and take her to a nearby park to pray."
Lachappelle said Aden is not being forced to leave school to pray, but that the district accommodated her mother's request for her to leave the campus this past week for prayer.
Lewiston Superintendent Leon Levesque, who learned of CAIR's written accusations hours after a press release had already been published on various Web sites, said, "Students are free to pray quietly during class if they choose as long as it's not disruptive," because "prayer is constitutionally protected in schools."
"They can pray audibly or silently," and are subjected to the same rules of order as apply to other students in the school. "We have never denied a student's right to pray," he said.
Aden's uncle, Ismail Warsame, who lives in Orono, said Lachappelle and another school official told the family that because the school department "could not provide a room for Muslims to pray, it was against the school policy for anyone to pray."
Lachappelle disputes that was the department's explanation.
Lachappelle said she told Jamad Warsame that the school department cannot provide special prayer rooms for students of any religion, but that "students certainly have a right to pray in school. We know that's their constitutional right."
A lot of kids pray silently in school," Lachappelle said, at their desks before a test or during study hall. "We don't promote prayer and we don't deny" students' right to pray, she said. "We're neutral."
Levesque said that staff is trained to protect the right of students to pray, and he's certain many students do pray unnoticed. The district also allows religious clubs to meet in school buildings before and after school, and that students are permitted to be excused from school for religious holidays.
In a written statement, Ismail Warsame called school officials' alleged actions in responding to Aden's effort to pray "a stunning scenario of lack of multicultural competency" and "clear violation of our constitutional rights to free religious expression."
Warsame also accused Lachappelle of hanging up on him as he was asking whether the school department would accommodate the family's request to accommodate the specific religious needs of certain students. Lachappelle acknowledged she did end a phone conversation with Warsame abruptly because "he wouldn't take no for an answer."
According to Lachappelle, after an involved conversation about the school's position on allowing silent prayer, she said she told Warsame that "this is what the ruling is. We're disagreeing, and I'm following district policy. I feel we need to end this conversation."
CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said Friday that if the Lewiston School Department did not address its four requests to allow prayer, modify school policy, institute training and protect Aden from retaliation, "we wouldn't really have much choice but to take the case further" because "the student has the legal right and the constitutional right to pray in school in a manner that is not disruptive to the learning environment."
Hooper said no one from CAIR spoke to school officials before filing its four-prong request because it is their general practice to file requests and then follow up with schools and other organizations to institute changes.

Lawmakers ask IRS to investigate CAIR
November 17, 2009
By Art Moore
Prompted by evidence in a new book, a senator and five Congress members are urging the Internal Revenue Service to investigate the Council on American-Islamic Relations to determine whether the controversial Muslim group's lobbying activities on Capitol Hill violate its nonprofit status.
The letter to IRS Commissioner Douglas H. Shulman is signed by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., and members of the House antiterrorism caucus, Reps. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., John Shadegg, R-Ariz., Trent Franks, R-Ariz., Paul Broun, R-Ga., and Patrick McHenry, R-N.C.
The Washington, D.C.-based CAIR – which had its relationship with the FBI cut off this year after being named an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terror-finance case in U.S. history – has been under increased scrutiny since the release of "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America," a WND Books publication by former Air Force special agent P. David Gaubatz and "Infiltration" author Paul Sperry. The authors present firsthand evidence CAIR is acting as a front for a well-funded conspiracy of the Muslim Brotherhood – the parent of al-Qaida and Hamas – to infiltrate the U.S. and help pave the way for Saudi-style Islamic law to rule the nation.
Get the book that exposed CAIR from the inside-out, autographed, from WND's Superstore!
The letter, also addressed to the House clerk, Senate secretary and Senate superintendent of records, points to evidence uncovered in "Muslim Mafia" that CAIR may be in violation of both the anti-excessive-lobbying provision of its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and the Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995 by failing to register with Congress as a federal lobbying organization.
As CAIR's own website states, the group's Governmental Affairs Department "conducts and organizes lobbying efforts on issues related to Islam and Muslims."
CAIR says its department is "active in monitoring legislation and government activities and then, responding on behalf of the American Muslim community. CAIR representatives have testified before Congress and have sponsored a number of activities designed to bring Muslim concerns to Capitol Hill."
As WND reported last month, Myrick, Shadegg, Franks and Broun formally asked the House sergeant at arms to investigate evidence from "Muslim Mafia" that CAIR is conspiring to plant "spies" inside Congress targeting sensitive security-related committees. In another letter, to Attorney General Eric Holder, the House members ask the Justice Department to reveal to Congress members why CAIR was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terror-finance case in U.S. history.
"Muslim Mafia" points out CAIR, as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, is severely restricted from lobbying and expressly prohibited from political campaigning.
By law, the book points out, CAIR must notify the IRS of any intent to lobby by filing a special form.
A 501(c)(3) organization "will lose its tax-exempt status and its qualification to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions if a substantial part of its activities are carried on to influence legislation," the IRS states in Form 5768.
Internal documentation and press releases obtained by "Muslim Mafia" authors suggest a substantial portion of CAIR's operations involve lobbying operations.
In its effort to repeal the Patriot Act antiterrorism law in 2005, for example, CAIR made 72 trips to Congress, according to internal documents. "Muslim Mafia" notes Congress met just 150 days that year.
CAIR also spends $25,000 a year to organize a national "lobby day on the Hill" in which its members nationwide come to Washington – armed with CAIR talking points on a single issue – to meeting with their representatives.
CAIR, which calls its governmental affairs department a "lobbying office," also has created databases to streamline its lobbying efforts, including one to automatically alert staffers on Capitol Hill about its policy issues.
IRS statutes also forbid CAIR from supporting or opposing anyone running for office, but CAIR has held political fundraisers benefiting Muslim U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., and other Democrats. The group also has used its resources to get out the vote for Ellison and Democrats in tight races.
In 2004, CAIR bused Muslim voters from mosques to polls to support Democrats in key Florida counties.
The IRS also prohibits CAIR from inviting Democrats to speak at its forums without extending formal invitations to Republicans. But with the exception of GOP Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, "Muslim Mafia" says, CAIR mostly has vilified Republicans rather than reach out to them.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, is suing "Muslim Mafia" co-author P. David Gaubatz and his son Chris over the evidentiary documents they obtained during Chris' six-month undercover penetration of the organization, which both the FBI and Justice Department have branded as a terror co-conspirator. As a result of revelations in "Muslim Mafia," the bipartisan Congressional Anti-Terrorism Caucus is calling for new, wide-ranging federal probes of CAIR. In the meantime, however, someone has to defend these two courageous investigators who have, at great personal risk, revealed so much about this dangerous group. WND has stepped up to the plate, procured the best First Amendment attorneys in the country and is paying for the Gaubatzes' defense – but we can't do it without your help. Please donate to WND's Legal Defense Fund now. Thank you.

Church & State Violation Examples:
1. An organization uses a government grant for religious activity.
2. A public school event includes prayer or a public school teaches creationism or intelligent design.
3. The government displays a religious symbol or text on public property.
4. Prayers are recited before or after public meetings, that contain language or symbols specific to one religion.
5. The government funds religious hospitals that refuse to provide certain kinds of reproductive health care services for religious reasons.
Government funding of religious schools or religious social service providers
6. The government provides grants or other aid to religious educational institutions or “faith-based” social service providers. Such funding is particularly constitutionally troublesome if:
7. government aid is actually used for religious instruction or activity; or
direct cash aid is given to a pervasively religious institution or program; or
the aid recipient discriminates in employment based on religion with respect to publicly-funded positions; or
the aid recipient coerces service recipients to submit to religious proselytization or take part in religious worship; or
only religious organizations are eligible for funding under the aid program.
Religious activity in the public schools
The government promotes or sponsors prayer or other religious activity in the public schools. Examples include:
8. prayer at school-sponsored events such as graduations, assemblies, and football games;
9. prayer at the beginning of the school day;
10. religious presentations by teachers or outside groups during the school day;
11. distribution of the Bible or other religious literature in school;
Bible-study courses;
12. teaching of creationism in science classes.
Theyare NOT SPECIAL and
Theyare NOT SPECIAL and should follow OUR LAWS and CUSTOMS or LEAVE!
We have a CONSTITUTION to follow.
The phrase "separation of church and state" is derived from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson in 1802 to a group identifying themselves as the Danbury Baptists. In that letter, referencing the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, Jefferson writes:
Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.[29]
The school officials said
The school officials said that all students can pray quietly in school (which is true, any student could technically pray by themselves at their desk or in the library if they wanted).
Please send your emails of support to the Lewiston school and ask that they NOT allow special treatment for Muslims. If they have a prayer room, that would be like having a church on school property. That is okay at a college where kids are adults and can make up their own mind but placing such things in schools for little children can manipulate them. In my opinion, they are trying to evangelize and bring Islam to our children.
HEre is the email for the superintendent:

I really have doubts that
I really have doubts that any child, whether they are Muslim or not, truly stand and say prayers at school. I'm sure they would be extremely self-conscious if that were the case.
Christians have been discriminated against for years at public schools so this is nothing new. If the Muslim students get free reign for their religious needs then freedom for Christians should also prevail (that means Christian groups, Bible study, etc. on school property).
okay-thats just hate-filled
okay-thats just hate-filled if i ever heard it! awful, awful, awful! thanks for proving once again that there is another person out there that stereotypes and is prejudiced. sounds like you have a lot of animosity. they say misery loves company-thats fine as long as people aren't making the rest of us look bad.
This is coming as a shock,
This is coming as a shock, but I do agree with queenhoneeybee. To say that they are filthy and smell is an unnecessary attempt at a low blow and can be construed as racist, though it is your right to think that. I do agree that since they are here, they must follow our laws and regulations. When I was in H.S., a group of teens used to gather around the flagpole and pray BEFORE the start of the school day. The were told to stop because it was being done on school property, they weren't a school authorized group, and the school couldn't show favoritism to one religious group. This was about 15 years ago. Where are the groups that fought to keep prayer out of school now? Caught in between a rock and a hard place: protecting their rights and being called racist, or siding with one religious group over another. I bet those groups never thought this would happen, which is why they are now silent on the matter. I think that if they are going to have a prayer room for one religious group that it should be open to any student of any religion who wants to pray, and that that room should be monitored for safety, and controlled with times and student capacity and scheduling. That would show tolerance of all cultures and religious organizations. Muslims in this country must be tolerant of other cultures and religions too.
Is this coming from one who
Is this coming from one who used the term "Lewiston losers"?
These last two posts do a
These last two posts do a perfect job in illustrating exactly what is HURTING Lewiston right now and what is keeping us from progressing. sunnyjournal: If you found yourself living in Mogadishu you would be completely lost in a society unlike anything you've ever seen before. I see Lewistonites all over seem to expect the Somali community to become flag-waving Americans the day they stepped foot on American soil. When any community of immigrants comes to a new place, there is always a rocky period of problems before things can be sorted out. People who don't understand this are clearly oblivious the the history of the Lewiston's French-Canadian and Acadian population. It will get better with each generation. I can already see significant progress with the youngsters in the Somali community. queenhoneybee: You're throwing words out there that are completely uncalled for. You have absolutely nothing constructive to contribute to the conversation. All you can do is whine about how everything out of someone's mouth is a clear example of prejudice. Perhaps instead of both sides jumping to conclusions and forming opinions based on hearsay, we could actually have a constructive conversation about something that's pretty important to our city's present and future?
Not All Muslims agree with
Not All Muslims agree with these extremists. My wife is Muslim and thinks this is nuts. They dont have to stop and pray as often as they say they do. The Koran has exceptions for work time and school.
Amen, Eagle. Fear not the
Amen, Eagle.
Fear not the enemy at the gate, for it is the enemy within that will devour you.
Why should there be
Why should there be exceptions for the Muslims when there aren't for any of the other religions. No longer allowed to celebrate anything with a religious theme but I am sure that times being what they are, the Muslims will get their way and the rest of us will be restricted. What a way to go America. And they wonder why people in this country are watching FOX more and more.
Being a past student of the
Being a past student of the Lewiston School system I can't believe this waste of time and effort either on a frivolous lawsuit. Hello you are now in America so adapt to the way of life or go back to your homeland if you do not like it. Its a choice you can make. Comes down to preferential treatment why should any religion get this I think not from the majority. Yes its time to take a stand and lets treat all as equal.
Norm thinks that as
Norm thinks that as Americans, we had the rights to religious freedoms at one time but now, because of Atheists, not Muslims, we can no longer pray in school or where we want to.
When I was in school all students said the Christian's Lord's prayerbefore the Pledge of Alligiance. My Jewish friends would pray silently as we are a bigotted, racist nation and always have been. Non-Christian Americans are still being killed in our armed forces officer training colleges [Constatine's Sword].
If you racial bigots picked up a college grade Maine history book [can not find it to cite source as I just moved] you will find that the Ku Kux Klan was started in Maine before it reached statehood and before there were any black people here!
That's my story and I am sticking to it!
The parrot thinks you might

Apparently we have another
Apparently we have another college edumacated idiot among us. Do tell us how it is possible to be racist against a religion.
And while you're at it how about some documented examples of "Non-Christian Americans are still being killed in our armed forces officer training colleges".
Then just for chuckles explain how the "Ku Kux(sic) Klan was started in Maine before it reached statehood", if you can comprehend the error in that statement.
My suggestion for you sir is to request a refund from whatever school(s) you may have attended.
Actually you can be racist
Actually you can be racist against a religion. Jewish is a race as well as a religion.

I must agree with and
I must agree with and congratulate the following three especially for saying it like it is: Concernredinpineetree, Jami, and Bumble. Unfortunately the Muslim population will have to accept the unfortunate fact that in this country we are all treated alike. If they want special rules, such as allowing prayer in school, they will have to provide their own schools as the Catholic and Christian denominations do. If they want to pray at work, work for a company that allows it.
To our School administrators, congratulation for standing up to this special interest group; especially to the one who terminated the phone conversation. To our politicians, stand up for America.
Certainly these people left their homelands for a reason; they came here of their own free will and must live according to our laws and customs.
Its a collaborative
Its a collaborative effort...it takes a village!?! in the meantime until the Muslim Community will be able to provide their own school for their children because some Mainers prove over and over again that they are discriminating what-have-yous... and can't deal with diversity-the children should not have to be the ones who are faulted, they need a safe, comfortable place to pray. It is their religious freedom/duty/routine...
There is a Maine State Employment Law that PROTECTS being discriminated against for religion. The Muslim Community should not have to change their ways in a religious sense for anyone else's.
Our laws and our customs PROTECT religious freedom and protect people from being discriminated against. "Our laws and customs"-who says? We are a diverse nation. Not "your way or the highway". Rubbish!
Non-muslims should be
Non-muslims should be granted protection FROM the muslim religion.
You are stretching the the
You are stretching the the law way past meaning or intent. An employer can not descriminate in hiring or promotion based on religion. That is far from providing prayer rooms, special days off, or any other accomodation due to religion. The cafeteria is not going to stop serving beef because a hindu works for the company or make everything kosher because a kosher jew works there. The company is not going to change or give holly days off for all the different faiths either and none of it is discrimination.
my comment was in response
my comment was in response and thought-specific... however for the sake of clarifying-so what makes anyone think that an employer wouldn't hire someone who is Muslim Religion because they KNOW that some pray during the day? I would hope that many would accommodate and at the very least schedule their break at the time when its most needed. however this has happened with many people with many religions. i know that NOT eveyone on SJ comment is an employer-heck I'm not even an employer. however, i would hope that a situation like that wouldn't impair someone who is fully capable and qualified for the job due to their faith. I don't think think that anyone is talking about serving beef here either.
Norm says to read up on the
Norm says to read up on the Crusades and you will see that we, as Christians, are the ancestors of barbarians. During the crusades, Christians killed men, women, children and livestock taking no prisoners. The Jews and Muslims on the other hand took prisoners, treated them well and used them as bargaining chips!
The school has no problem
The school has no problem with students praying privately so long as they do not disturb or endanger others in doing so. If the young lady sat at a desk or table and prayed quietly or silently I am sure nothing would have been said. Where the problem lies is in here kneeling in a hallway. You are not allowed so sit or kneel or place objects on the floor or in any other way obstruct the hallway. If a fire alarm were pulled or if some in attentive passerby tripped over this girl there would be all kinds of trouble. If pne of them were injured the lawsuits would be flying in all likelihood but either way someone would have been injured needlessly. Would this girl kneel and pray in the middle of Center Street? Freedom of religion is a great thing, but common sense is even better. Let the girl sit at a desk or table in their normal location and say all the prayers she wants quietly or silently with out disturbing others or putting her self or others at risk of accidental injury.
yeah-i'm sure that was the
yeah-i'm sure that was the exact thought of the teacher when they told her she couldn't pray.
queen bee you make me sick,
queen bee you make me sick, go ahead let them pray and just see what can of worms that will open up. They tried that with their jobs( the few that did work) and their jobs told them you pray on your own time, same should go here.... when our kids can't even say celebrate Christmas, Halloween , or almost ANY holiday because of them, get your facts striaght before you go saying simple words out here. get a life.
Why the heck do they think
Why the heck do they think they should have special rights?
they shouldn't and hopefully
they shouldn't and hopefully they won't fall for this nonsence, maybe if they weren't so worried about what they want to do and getting everything they can from us, then they will learn faster. this is nonsence and i hope it doesn't go anywhere, if so be prepared for all parents to sue.
Hey bee, it's not the the
Hey bee, it's not the the poor, down trodden Muslim kids that are being bullied and put into corners. And it's not the children of the alleged haters that are forming packs of 4 or 5, going into stores like Blockbusters, and ripping them off for their DVDS. Nor is it the children of the "haters" that are trashing kids behind the schools and at Kennedy Parks.
You feel sorry for the down trodden? Drive down Ash St after the Middle School lets out and watch the down trodden as they strut down the street, holding up traffic and glaring at you as you wait for them to cross.
Yea, I shed tears for them every day.........
Last I new-pedestrians had
Last I new-pedestrians had the right of way.
As far as 'glaring'-maybe no one would have noticed if they weren't 'staring'.
I was bullied in school-tormented... every single day of my childhood life. For what? My hair? My skin color? I never understood the reasons until I went to a school far away from here. The day I was called the 'n'-word was the day I realized that I WAS different. I was called the 'n'-word and I wasn't even African-American or even Mixed African-American. I can tell you from personal experience that when a child/woman/or man is backed into a corner their survival mechanism kicks into gear. I know the Muslim Communities Children are being faulted and being verbally, physically attacked. I know the Muslim Community is being faulted and verbally/physically attacked. A lot is due to ignorance and people having the misconception about a different culture and people the are angered by their own government. Look people-we are a nation of the most racially/religiously diverse. We need to accept that. We should have open arms.
I'll bet that if you talked
I'll bet that if you talked the non muslim kids at LJHS they would tell you that it's the somalis who are causing a lot of problems too. You make it seem that they are innocent and that it is the white kids fault. Reading your past posts I think you are a bigot not the other way around. It seems you have a big chip on your shoulder queenie.
