Tax 'reform' is just a tax increase

The Sun Journal almost got it right in the Nov. 20 editorial, "Reform's appeal is stability."

Yes, the controversial "tax reform" package is about more and steadier revenues to Augusta. It has never really been about anything more than that. All of the noise about "revenue neutrality" and "exporting taxes" is just camouflage for the real issue — more money to Augusta. That is why this law will face a repeal referendum in June.

Where the editorial got it wrong was in the assertion that if reform fails, Mainers will suffer. Not only is that wrong, it is 180 degrees wrong.

This new tax scheme from the majority party will hit low-income and elderly Mainers the hardest, especially the 300,000 Mainers whose incomes are so low they don't even file tax returns. For them, this is sales tax increase, with no upside.

Significant relief will go to people making more than $350,000, based on an analysis by Albert DiMillo, a veteran CPA who ran the tax divisions of Bath Iron Works and Raytheon Corporation. For average income folks, the suspension of tax indexing for inflation until 2013 will turn their tiny income tax reductions for 2010 into tax increases four years from now.

The tax reform that Mainers need is called tax relief. The tax-poor Maine people are not overly concerned with a state government that occasionally has to tighten its belt. What really matters is relief from the stifling burden that the overspending in Augusta has produced.

Rep. Bruce Bickford, Auburn

Truth is mr. Bickford is

Truth is mr. Bickford is correct - this is one of the greatest (worst) tax schemes ever designed by the socialist democratic party in Maine. I urge everyone to go to the state tax site and try doing their own taxes under the new rules vs the old rules, then add to that the additional items you now have to pay sales tax on...now watch sales tax be expanded and raised to combat th lack of revenue the state is already seeing...duh - you can;t tax your way out of a recession.

And yet the majority of maien continues to vote in these bozos....you get what you pay for...

"And yet the majority of maien continues to vote in these bozos....you get what you pay for..."

They're bozos, but you cannot even spell the name of this state, what does that make you? Your analysis of this law is fatally flawed. Why? Because you're unable to take all facets into consideration. You concentrate only the the parts that seem to corroborate your conclusion, and ignore everything else. That is the republican way.

tron, forgive my TYPING, not

tron, forgive my TYPING, not my SPELLING, if thats the best criticism you can make I win! as to all facets - get with the program - its a TAX bill and I consider myself qualified to interpret and understand it, in fact 200 clients expect no less from me. Oh and I'm not republican but you seem stuck on that one for 2 years now, again, get with the program. Exactly what other facets do I take into account - more items taxed by sales tax? More income taxes for people earning more than $75K as a couple? The tax break came with a provision that increasedf the taxes for many so people like you could continue to loaf about with questionable disabilities. Time to put the deadbeats to work for once, then we'd have plenty of people paying taxes instead of over 300,000 asking for a handout - yes 318,678 are on at least some form of Medicaid assistance out of 1,300,000 Maine population, per the DHHS commissioner herself!

I agree this is not the best

I agree this is not the best law. Even though this law will have an impact on low to moderate income families there is on benefit that not many are seeing. All Individuals who cheat our income tax code by working under the table, under reporting income, even drug dealers will have to pay a little extra now for services and items.

I for one am for a flat sales tax instead of an Income tax structure. That way everyone pays their fair share. However that is not prefect either since most would circumvent the system and purchase outside the state.

fixit001, obviously has some

fixit001, obviously has some problems. His anaysis of national politics is almost completely wrong. NAFTA didn't violate the Constitution. Its a bad treaty, but its very constitutional. Clinton never committed a crime in office. I don't know the President he's referring to about the bailout money, but let's hope its Bush because Obama continued the Bush bailouts with many added restrictions. "We" have made billions of dollars in profits from those bailouts.
And that's the problem with Rep. Bickford's letter. Where's the truth. He says, "This new tax scheme from the majority party will hit low-income and elderly Mainers the hardest..."
Primarily this comes from Mr. Albert Dimillio (one of the 13% of Mainers who will pay more until the new tax reform.). Rep. Bickford doesn't write that Mr. Dimillo's analysis was refuted months ago. He does'nt mention the refundable tax credits which replace deductions and will give low-income and enderly Mainers a check much larger than any sales tax increases. 6 out of 7 Mainers will pay lower taxes - $55,000,000 less under this bill. That's a tax cut.

Representative Bickford

Representative Bickford writes:

"This new tax scheme from the majority party will hit low-income and elderly Mainers the hardest, especially the 300,000 Mainers whose incomes are so low they don't even file tax returns. For them, this is sales tax increase, with no upside. "

-----------------------

No Upside? BS!

But now, Representative, with the new law these low income Mainers will have the opportunity to file a return and receive a partial refund on the sales taxes they paid similar to the federal "Earned Income Credit"

Now why didn't you mention this??

Then why don't you do it,

Then why don't you do it, Rep Bickford? I am sick of people like you and the rest of your party who bitch constantly about every attempt to better this state, but NEVER offer anything in its place. So get off your duff and do what you were elected to do. If all you want is the pretty title, then get the heck out of the way and let Maine go into the next century.

T...Why don't you tell us

T...Why don't you tell us what's good and what's bad about the tax reform that Rep. Bickford is criticizing. Tell us how lowering the state income tax for the higher tax brackets and increasing the sales tax for all will put Maine in the next century. For one thing, your request, as stated, would only put us in the 19th century.

ahh lets see the 1st thing

ahh lets see the 1st thing to get rid rid of is the health insurance for familes of the state worker (as well as city and county) let them pay the same as WE ALL DO!!!! next remove the health insurance for those that retire like WE ALL HAVE TO DO!! in other words treat our workers as we are treated NO MORE NO LESS take the Admins and knock thier over paid saleries down by at least 30% Now you will have saved many millions then it is onto the programs get rid of the touchy feely programs and stick to the basic need programs like we had in the 70s instead of all the differant programs the politicians pushed after a certain President hurt his career by calling for a wage freeze nation wide then started to see a recovery at the end of his term only to be ignored as the reason while the next president came to power and the economy was steadily increasing and had almost surpassed the previous years high spot on the index while th new president had yet to file his first bill That president took full credit for the turn around then started the trickle down economics which caused the next round of spirling economics until his pedecessor then during his admin which he decided to put his head in the sand when it came to the economics of the country then came a young man named clinton who bet the former president because the former president failed to take care of home first then the economy soared during in his admin yet though he and his croneies trumped the Constitution of the United States with NAFTA and at that time became a criminal in office then came the roll out of programs one after another whit no way to pay for them it eventualy began sinking the ship again then came Bush jr. OH VEY I could write tons of his Idiotic term but one of the first things he removed immediately was the ban on companies who had prevouisly been convicted of felonies thereby within months of doing so A company was to have bilked the US out of close to a billion dollars then as well as a few other companies who did the same only for millions instead of course to this day nothig was done to the company who took Us for a ride maybe it was because it was operated by the vice President could be, Now here we have yet another president who is as stupid as he is tall giving away millions without any rulez as to the bailout moneys use. ( of course the recpients were and still are the highest donators to the political engine) Now the economy is soaring to new lows because our moneies hav been wasted and the value is plumeting while the deficit is increasing at an alaming rate and yet nothing is being done to the culprit who started the whole show that being the OIL/GAS industry who have and still do funnel hundreds of Millions to thier campain coffers. then comes the recession and all this is really hurting not only Us the Working people but YES the Politicians Also with less money comming from the people (that is some of the working public still give to our politicians) they knew they had to act quick to grab as much as they could hence the HEALTH DEBATE which is filling thier coffers at an alarming rate as if the companies who are donating could use the monies to cut the cost of insurance for a few years. Do you all see a problem here Ahh Oil/Gas prices are allowed to spike and these companies ARE ALLOWED to rake in BILLIONS so long as our elected officals get thier cut, The medical community are also no differant when a pill that costs 1cent to make sells to Us for 25.00 thats a crime but as long as our politicinas get thier cut it is AOK, Then comes the import treaties all of which are bogus as they unsurp the constitution and are therfore illegal all because of huge donations to the the RNC, and DNC your politicans campain finance athoritys where Billions of dollars are Laundered from overseas to your elected officals who voted for these treaties. ther is nothing we can do except that when one of these politicans come up to me I only Spit at thier feet and tell them I have more respect for cochroaches.
