Boys' roundup: Hersom's late jumper lifts Leavitt in opener

TURNER - Jordan Hersom's corner jumper with 45 seconds left put Leavitt up for good Friday night as the Leavitt boys' basketball team opened the season with a 47-46 win over Lincoln Academy.
Hersom finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Trailing 44-43, Hersom's jumper put the Hornets ahead. Cam Griffin and Lucas Witham each hit free throws down the stretch to open the lead to five before Lincoln hit a three-pointer in the closing seconds.
Witham finished with five points while Griffin added four.

Ethan Wajer led the Eagles with eight.

Mt. Blue 52, Messalonskee 37

FARMINGTON - Mt. Blue limited Messalonskee to four points in the second quarter to open up some daylight en route to a 52-37 victory over the Eagles in their KVAC season opener.

The game was tied 13-13 after one quarter before Mt. Blue surged with an 11-4 run to take a 24-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Jordan Hoyt and Cam Sennick led the Cougars with 12 points apiece, while Ryan Backus had nine points and six steals. Seth Berry also recorded six steals.

Ryan McLellan scored 12 points for Messalonskee.

Gould 45, Buckfield 44 OT

BUCKFIELD - Ronnie Ruiz dropped in five of his seven points in overtime to help Gould edge Buckfield to a 45-44 victory in boys' basketball on Friday.

Casey Robertson's bucket in the final minute of regulation for Buckfield sent the game into the extra session.

From there, Ruiz nailed a 3-pointer from the wing for the key basket in overtime. Adam Bartlett led the Huskies with 14 points.

Austin Dooley of Buckfield led all scorers with 18 points.

Brunswick 45, Oxford Hills 28

PARIS - Steve Carter netted 15 points and ripped down 11 boards as Brunswick upended Oxford Hills 45-28 in KVAC boys' basketball action Friday.

The Dragons trailed 14-10 in the final two minutes of the first half, but used five turnovers and turned in a 7-0 run to end the half and change the momentum of the game.

Darrell Wilson added 13 points and Rashon Edgerton scored 12 for the visitors.

Matt McVety led the Vikings with seven points, while hauling down five rebounds.

Winthrop 37, Lisbon 30

WINTHROP - Junior Billy Gordon drained a team-high 16 points to lead Winthrop to a 37-30 victory over Lisbon in MVC boys' basketball action Friday evening.

The Ramblers (1-0) turned a minor deficit in the first quarter into a 12-12 deadlock at the half. Winthrop's defense held firm in the third quarter, taking a nine-point margin into the final frame.

Senior guard Scott Eck posted a game-high 17 points for the Greyhounds (0-1) on five baskets, including three from 3-point range, and four free throws.

Lisbon tossed a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, but Winthrop performed well at the line to seal the win.

Falmouth 66, Gray-NG 34

GRAY - Senior guard Stefano Mancini tossed a game-high 23 points to lead Falmouth to a convincing 66-34 victory over Gray-New Gloucester in WMC boys' basketball action Friday evening.

The Yachtsmen cruised through the first two quarters with the wind at their back. They jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter and led 40-17 at the half. Mancini had three of his four 3-pointers in the first half.

Senior center Taylor Valente led the Patriots with 17 points on six field goals and five free throws in the losing effort.

Maranacook 59, |Oak Hill 42

READFIELD - Senior guard Sam Poulin came up big, scoring 21 points, to lead Maranacook to a 59-42 victory over Oak Hill in KVAC boys' basketball action Friday.

The Black Bears (1-0) steamed ahead in the second quarter for a 29-20 halftime lead. Senior forward David Clough scored 12 points, while junior forward Harry Land-phear posted another 10 for Maranacook.

Raiders (0-1) narrowed the deficit to as low as seven in the third quarter, but Maranacook's Poulin stepped up the tempo in the final minutes of the game to secure the win.

Telstar 67, Carrabec 58

BETHEL - Junior forward Daniel Vaughn notched a double-double with 25 points and 12 steals to power Telstar to a 67-58 victory over Carrabec in MVC boys' basketball action Friday.

The Cobras (0-1) slithered out to a 28-25 halftime lead. Senior center Aaron Lane recorded a team-high 25 points, while five teammates chipped in on offense with 10 3-point baskets.

The Rebels (1-0) also received a double-double from junior forward Ben Field, who scored 23 points and grabbed 25 rebounds.

Telstar converted a 3-point halftime deficit into a nine-point lead after three and kept pace during an intense 23-23 fourth quarter to hold on for the win.

St. Dom's 59, Georges Valley 54

THOMASTON - St. Dom's ignited the afterburners in the fourth quarter after coasting a bit to ensure a 59-54 triumph over Georges Valley in MVC boys' basketball action Friday.

 The Saints (1-0) were tied 54-54 with 16 seconds remaining in regulation when senior Chris Bryant drained a pair of free throws. The Saints immediately forced a turnover and junior guard Kurt Johnson went in for the layup. Johnson had a game-high 18 points.

Senior guard Robbie Beverage and Logan Cross shared a team-high 12 points for the Buccaneers (0-1) in the losing effort.

Mountain Valley 81, Madison 37

MADISON - Jacob Arsenault and Jon Benjamin each scored 12 points to lead Mountain Valley to an 81-37 victory over Madison in MVC boys' basketball action on Friday. 

The Falcons built up a strong lead with Isaac Mills contributing 11 points and Adam Bedard scoring three treys towards the win. Top scorer for Madison was Cody Briggs, who finished with 10 points.  

Hockey

Hebron 6, Bridgton 2

HEBRON - Six different players scored as Hebron sailed to a 6-2 victory over Bridgton in varsity hockey action Friday evening.

Bridgton opened up the scoring and led 1-0 after the first period. But, the Lumberjacks (1-1-1) responded with four unanswered goals in the second period. Ian Canty, Alex Doumeng, Shane Hearn and Cam Moniz scored on a pair of power plays and two four-on-four situations for Hebron.

Bridgton cut the deficit in half, 4-2, with a power play goal at the 7:16 mark of the third period, but slipped into the loss column as they gave up another pair of goals before the final buzzer.
