Barbara Kawliche

1942 - 2010

LEWISTON — Barbara Kawliche, 67, of 5 Ernest St., Lewiston, passed away Jan. 9, four years after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

She was born in East Windsor, Conn., Dec. 16, 1942, the daughter of John Selden and Alfreda (Potwin) Clapp. She was a graduate of East Windsor High School and Bates College. She then received a master's degree in social work from Boston University.

After graduation, she devoted her life to her family and helping her community. She continued her good work until her last days, with her many loyal and kind friends at AdCare, an organization dedicated to providing prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery services for professionals working in the field of substance abuse.

She married her husband of 42 years, Stanley Kawliche, in 1967.

She was an early advocate for using technology and the Internet to make the world a better place. She enjoyed spending time at the ocean and was a strong believer in the importance of human rights and equality for all. She also enjoyed travel, studied in England and spent time living with families in Ecuador, Costa Rica and Lithuania.

She is survived by her husband, Stan; her son, David and his son, Derek and fiancée, Joan; her son, Greg and his wife, Linda; her stepson, Boris and his two sons, Alex and Laurent; her daughter-in-law, Aimee; and her sister, Fran and her husband, Mike Becker; she also leaves behind many other family, friends and neighbors, including Terry Koliche and Tom Oliver and Sasha, a loyal companion to Barbara, Stan and the family.

For those who want to honor her life and spirit, she asks simply that you perform a genuine act of kindness for family, friends, or strangers in her memory. The family is planning a memorial service at a later date.
