Fire destroys camp

CHESTERVILLE — Firefighters lugged equipment about a quarter-mile across a frozen pond Friday afternoon to get to a seasonal camp that was fully engulfed in flames, Chesterville Fire and Rescue Chief Robert Hastings said Monday.

Leonard Lane, a private road that leads to the camp off Horseshoe Pond Road, was unplowed so firefighters could not drive a truck in, he said.

About 13 firefighters responded after a year-round resident on Horseshoe Pond heard the fire and reported it about 4 p.m.

They traveled on foot and used a sled to haul equipment including a portable pump and hoses to reach the site at the backside of the pond, he said.

"We cut a hole in the ice for the pump," he said, and used it to pump water to put out the fire.

The cause and where the fire started is undetermined due to the amount of damage, Hastings said.

There was power into the electrical box at the camp but the main breaker was shut off, he said.

The owner, Rusty Clukey of Florida, is believed to have insurance on the camp.

There were no injuries.

Firefighters left the scene about five hours after they arrived, Hastings said.
