WELD – The Planning Board is holding a hearing Monday on a proposed six-month moratorium on wind power projects. The hearing will also address the revised Shoreland Zoning Ordinance.
The hearings will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 22 in the multipurpose room at the town office.
Both proposals are expected to go to voters at the annual town meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at the town hall.
The moratorium will give townspeople time to educate themselves about wind power technology and establish guidelines for the development of commercial wind farms in town, if that's what voters choose.
The shoreland zoning revision would allow owners of property in resource protection to upgrade septic systems, town Code Enforcement Officer Katharine Shoaps said Thursday. Currently, there are no provisions for those property owners to replace failed systems that are detrimental to the lake, she said.

verified Gov. Baldacci has turned down a statewide moratorium when asked by a group of concerned citizens to do so.
What is he afraid of? Why won't he let the good people of Maine educate themselves about wind power? Seems he has something to hide.
That is the problem. People in Maine are educating themselves. They are learning from those in Mars Hills and Vinalhaven. There is enough data though to start building them, but they must set back the proper distance from occupied structures.
There has been enough moratoriums on this issue, it has been studied to death. Time has come to start building at full speed. There has been no logical reasons against wind turbines, except some people don't like it. Time for you right wing wackos to get out of the way of progress. Don't build one on your property, period.
a six month moratorium on wind development is a wise move being made by many towns throughout Maine. It gives the citizens a chance to take a good look at their unique community assests and gauge how wind farms would influence them.
