Man falls asleep at wheel, truck hits pole, trailer

JAY — Police say a man fell asleep behind the steering wheel of his truck Monday morning, and the truck hit a pole and proceeded into a parking lot and struck a trailer.

Jacob Boivin, 25, of Wilton was driving east on the road known locally as East Dixfield Road when he fell asleep, Jay officer Nicholas Gulliver said.

The 1986 Ford F-350 went into oncoming traffic, hit a utility pole by SIB Enterprise, and snapped the pole in half, knocking the wires across the road, Gulliver said.

That did not stop the truck and it continued into SIB's parking lot and struck the front of the Barker racing trailer and drove it back a ways, he said. The business is owned by Steve and Ida Barker of North Jay.

Boivin was uninjured, Gulliver said.

Boivin told police he works a lot of shifts and was heading back to work at 6:23 a.m. when the accident occurred, after working late Sunday, Gulliver said.

The truck was totaled and the trailer received front-end damage, he said.
