PARIS — Paris Public Library’s Novel Idea Book Club will meet to discuss “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminister Boy” by Gary D. Schmidt, an English professor at Calvin College, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 18.
Schmidt visited Maine to do research for this young adult historical novel, which deals with the harsh reality of discrimination in Maine of blacks, mixed races and those with “differences.” This unfortunate group of people were isolated on Malaga Island off the coast of Maine near Phippsburg, from Civil War times to the early 1900s.
A refreshment related to the book will be available.
For those who are unable to attend, there is an option of being a silent participant, a reader who e-mails their thoughts about the book to children’firstname.lastname@example.org prior to the discussion date. Responses from each silent participant will be shared during the discussion at the Novel Idea Book Club.
