PORTLAND (AP) — Officials at the Cumberland County Jail think they have pinpointed the source of the cocaine that led to 20 inmates failing drug tests earlier this month.
Investigators told the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1xL3Zn8 ) they think a single inmate who swallowed a cocaine-filled balloon before his arrest is behind the surge in positive tests for illegal drugs at the state’s most populous county jail.
The inmate’s name was not disclosed.
The inmates failed the random drug screening on Dec. 15.
Jail administrator Maj. John Costello has pledged a crackdown on the smuggling of illicit drugs, stepping up the number of random inmate drug screens to every shift and conducting thousands of inmate cell searches.
But he says there is no way to keep drugs out entirely.
