Original play spotlights women in poetry

PORTLAND — Port Veritas has collaborated with Mama’s CrowBar, Rhythmic Cypher and the St. Lawrence Center for Performing Arts to present “Weaving Conversations With The Sky,” an original play celebrating women in poetry.

The play, curated and directed by Portland poet and Mama’s CrowBar proprietor Tricia Pryce Henley, will be staged at 1 and 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at the St. Lawrence Center.

The performances will help raise funds for Sarah Herklots, Portland’s 2012 Women of the World Poetry Slam representative, as she prepares to compete in the Women of the World Poetry Slam in Denver, Colo.

“Weaving Conversations With The Sky” is made up of vignettes by such famed female poets as Sappho, Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Barret Browning, the Bronte sisters and Phyllis Wheatley. The play culminates in a battle-esque scene between Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton.

The second act of the show will feature respected contemporary female poets, including Herklots performing her chosen pieces; Stonecoast Director Annie Finch; Keita A. Whitten, host of the “Mama Africa Show;” and Portland-based slam poet Heidi Therrien.

Tickets are $12 matinee/$15 evening; $10 for students and seniors. Call 775-5568 or visit www.stlawrencearts.org./
