There are many things that can be said about Gov.-elect Paul LePage's decision to hire his daughter for his office staff.
She isn't even six months out of college and will work at a pay rate that would be the envy of other new grads in this state, $41,000 per year. For that matter, it would be an appealing salary to many Mainers who have worked their whole lives.
And, yes, she is essentially without job experience. Other than a scant few months working on the campaign, combined with some short stints working in retail and in a restaurant, she has no professional experience at all.
She clearly is not the most qualified person for the job unless, of course, you consider the one highly valued quality of knowing her father's mind.
Finally, in a period of tight budgets, cutbacks in government services and furlough days, her appointment does seem a little out of touch with the mood of the electorate.
It doesn't just seem like "business as usual," but business worse than usual.
On the other hand, LePage supporters say she "earned her stripes" during the campaign and deserves the job.
Clearly, if this is the worst and most controversial decision Paul LePage makes over the next four years, he will be remembered as a miracle worker.
We will only raise one cautionary point at this time, and it's about a word we have heard repeatedly during this appointment process — loyalty.
More so than any governor we can remember, loyalty seems to have become a key qualification for this administration.
LePage himself has explained several times that he expects reforming Maine state government to be contentious and that the battles ahead will not be for the faint of heart.
The new governor is devoted to changing the way state government works, and much of that agenda no doubt will be vehemently opposed by Democrats and state employees.
So, LePage does need decisive people who can stand up to the pressures that will result from his ambitious agenda.
At the same time, the state does not need a governor surrounded by a group of yes men, yes women and yes daughters.
Loyalty is necessary, but sometimes the most important form of loyalty is an adviser with the courage to tell the boss he's dead wrong.
In 2005, Doris Kearns Goodwin published a book about another Republican, Abraham Lincoln.
"Team of Rivals" outlines Lincoln's "political genius" of appointing to his cabinet three men who had run against him for president.
Lincoln felt that conflicting opinions and personalities provide a commander and chief with the widest range of advice and opinions for making decisions.
None of which means that Paul LePage should have appointed Eliot Cutler or Libby Mitchell to his cabinet, nor does it suggest they would have accepted such an appointment.
But a governor needs to hear all views, whether he wants to hear them or not.

so, first, congrats to allie
so, first, congrats to allie and visine on finding eachother, congrats againg and good luck (insert eyeroll) this is whats up: i called granny obama crusty, i admit it-shes old and therefore qualifies. I also said granny crust is living for free in the white house as a "nanny" (hahha) in the same way as the libs are putting the "chubby" gal is living in the blaine house with a college education and more money than visine and tron will make ligit in decades.

How sad you find old people crusty. You could gain a lot if you knew a few crusty old goats. Some of the smartest, wittiest, kindest people I know are old. I think the Gov is going to regret this decision. His very young, very inexperienced, and sadly, very obese, daughter is being thrown on to the political stage and mu guess is, she is not ready. Most obese people have emotional issues and being thrown into a controversial job is not going to help matters. I wish her luck though...

Allarie,
Which of Princess LePage's mothers are you talking about, her biological or step? You see, LePage had another family in Canada before the Vietnam war ended and it was safe for him to come back to the states ... and leave his "starter family" in Canada. Princess LePage is part of Big Daddy's "second" family, not his first. Maybe his first family is slimmer than his second? They have universal health care in Canada, you know, so chances are his first family doesn't have to choose between good food and health care.

Allarie,
Good points. What I don't get is that obesity tends to strike the lower socioeconomic strata of American society. Given that LePage was supposedly such a "successful" businessman, I guess he's the exception among the tippy top tier of the "super successful" of Maine? Right?? I mean, looking back at the Gubernatorial field on both sides, we see highly successful lawyers Libby Mitchell and Peter Mills as quite fit for their age, especially Mills ... we see highly successful businesswoman Rosa as rail thin, perhaps even a little too thin ... we saw a very fit and trim mega millionaire Les Auten ... I would say that with the exception of Cutler, who carries too much weight but who clearly is very well heeled with an estate in Cape Elizabeth and amazing resume that lists something more than "junk merchant," we have LePage as the one truly obese "candidate."
It makes me wonder if LePage is really all that "successful" after all ... maybe he made the mistake to shop for snacks at Marden's?

OK I just googled Lauren LePage and I would like to say her weight is troubling. I will not bad mouth her but I would like to ask what does her mom look like? I attended a dance recital in Auburn a few years ago and the number of obese young women on stage was staggering. I know Walmart makes it all too easy to buy family sized junk food for a few dollars, but my God, if this beautiful, (and she is a pretty girl), doesn't get help she is headed toward full blown diabetes if she doesn't have it already.

Ignorance isn't strength. Sara Palin, a woman in the image of Paul LePage, was so unaccomplished that the Republican sherpas sent by the panicked McCain campaign had to teach her basic American history, and as for being Governor of Alaska, not only did she quit before completing two years, she had to lie through her teeth about the many failures that stood in contrast to her brave, neo-con positions ... like actually fighting for the bridge to nowhere.
The Republican party runs on simple, trite phrases. LePage did precisely that. There are seriously complex problems that are being "addressed" with little more than chewing gum, bailing wire, and duct tape. It's the Republican way. The sad thing is that America is losing its ability to think. The Republican party "frames" everything in a black-or-white way that is merely designed to stop debate before it can start. Of course they don't want debate, much of the Republican agenda is abhorrent to most Americans. Doesn't mean they can't appeal to fear, smear, doom, and ignorance. Sad but true.

Given that Republicans are led by the likes of LePage, a person whose only business achievement is to get hired by his father-in-law and proceed to boost the bottom line by using taxpayers to subsidize underpaid employees through public assistance, I think it makes about as much sense for him to immediately scam taxpayers by hiring his unqualified daughter. LePage has spent a lifetime serving only himself, it is why he is a Republican after all.
Republicans blindly "supporting" LePage can offer their "tired old lib" line while looking in the mirror if they're trying to invoke some vision of "failure." Let's not forget that we're in two wars, one unnecessary, thanks to Republicans .. 911 happened thanks to Bush and Republicans ... and Bush nearly "led" America into another Great Depression. No thanks ... I'll look at the "conservative movement" as something to flush as a sad, sick chapter of American history and then light a match.
Given that LePage will bring enormous failure to Maine, who cares if his daughter is unqualified and shouldn't be allowed to live in the Blaine House at taxpayer expense, it's just one more pothole on the road to Republicanland.

Gil,
When Bill Clinton appointed Hillary to head up efforts to reform health care, which by the way Republicans trashed allowing a 200% increase across-the-board in the cost of health insurance over the following 10 years, she had significant experience as an attorney, was an Ivy League graduate and graduate of Yale Law School, and had served in various other professional and philanthropic capacities including holding a seat on the Board of Directors of Wal Mart. And you're comparing her at that time to LePage's "Princess"?
You have either no shame, no understanding, or no ability to see the desperation in your blind loyalty to the most damaging force in America, the Republican party. Try engaging with reality for once Gil, it'll present an entirely different view of reality for you.
Eventually you might start being constructive and stop supporting ignorant, self-interested, worthless Republicans like LePage.

Ok first of all, bringing Obama and Clinton into this shows you cannot justify what LePage has done. It's kinda hard to say "State Workers are making too much" when you fresh out of school daughter is making 41K right out of the gate.
Secondly - To those questioning Hillary and Obama's experience - Obama has the best character reference possible - 52.9% of the voting population voted for him, and he won the election. Like him or no, this he has the experience or not, he got the job straight up with no tricks.
As for Clinton, here's here bio - She embarked on a career in law after graduating from Yale Law School in 1973. Following a stint as a Congressional legal counsel, she moved to Arkansas in 1974 and married Bill Clinton in 1975. Rodham cofounded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families in 1977 and became the first female chair of the Legal Services Corporation in 1978. Named the first female partner at Rose Law Firm in 1979, she was twice listed as one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America. First Lady of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and 1983 to 1992 with husband Bill as Governor, she successfully led a task force to reform Arkansas's education system. She sat on the board of directors of Wal-Mart and several other corporations.
So, she seems VERY qualified to spearhead health care reform.
If LePage was smart, he would have gotten her a job at Marden's. No one would have an issue with that. Boy, you give Republican's power, and they act like a bunch of jackasses. This will come up in four years, guaranteed.

"He's qualified because he won the election", then I guess you could say the same for Lepage.... "He won, get over it!"

And how much was Hilliary Clinton paid for her service? Nothing, she did it to help the country, I know, that is a foreign concept to you.

Tron, your "concept" of "helping" the country and of course this destitute state has been to stay home sitting day and night in front of a computer paid for by working tax payers while you contribute nothing beyond irritating said taxpayers with name calling and insults while cashing welfare checks backed said taxpayes with their hard earn dollars taken from them against their wills in the form of taxes. Tron, putting your name on here as a neon banner over your name is a very dangerous thing to be doing especially when the only ones the hard working people left reading this rag will be reading will be you and those like you to enrage them as the economy continues to be dragged down by (I really love this) One, Big Ass Mistake America, OBAMA. There are more and more violent crimes of rage and of desperation taking place and it won't be getting any better, hate to see you become a statistic Tron because of your mouth on a keyboard via the SJ forums. Lots of people out there tired of supporting people like you Tron. People tired of working for nothing, or worse losing their jobs and everything else while the likes of you sit warm and cozy inf front of a computer day and night typing away on a computer just twisting the knife.

Your facts are incorrect dear sir. And the fact that you seem to forget Obama took the helms from your man Bush when the banks and wall street were plunging, (and Bush began the bailout prior to his departure), is curious to say the least. But One Big Ass Mistake America is so clever you might want to work on another for LePage; Let's employ pitifully awkward girls everybody!

You do NOT support me. I do NOT collect welfare, and to say such without proof is libel. But, of course, you make these charges under the cloak of anonymity, so as to shelter yourself and relieve you of the need to prove your accusations. THAT's why this policy change is good.

Tron you’re the biggest troll on the Sun-Journal. Why you would be so foolish to post your personal information is beyond me, but it is no surprise you try to belittle those who would prefer to remain anonymous for safety reasons, you are always looking for a reason to belittle anyone.

You failed to mention that even with a 41k job, the state will be paying for this daughter's room and board. And that she hasn't lived in Maine for the last few year, having 'lived' in Florida, being eligible for in-state tuition. This governor may well change the way this state does business, but is this what people voted for?
