Oxford Fair plans to recognize 25 ‘Hidden Heroes’

OXFORD – Do you know a hidden hero?

The directors of the 162nd Oxford County Fair have decided that its theme will be “Hidden Heroes Walk Among Us.”

Oxford County residents are being asked to submit letters of nomination for an individual who has impacted their lives. The nominations must be residents of Oxford County who are 14 or older.

A total of 25 “hidden heroes” will be recognized at a Festival of Recognition on Sept. 14 during the four-day fair that draws thousands of people each year.

The fair will be held Sept. 12-15 at the fairgrounds on Pottle Road off Route 26.

In a statement released by fair officials recently, Harry Harper, spokesman for the Heroes Project, said, “The project honors someone in the woodpile that no one knows anything about, a quiet listener who doesn’t make waves and leads a helpful life. They’re ordinary, hard working people and they are all over Oxford County.”

Harper, a retired 88-year-old doctor who is one of eight founding doctors of Stephens Memorial Hospital still alive, said he was honored to be selected spokesman for the project.

“It’s just a gift. An honor. A nice gesture. I’m against sinning and for motherhood,” he chuckled.

According to information from the Oxford County Fair officials, letters of nomination should be no longer than 150 words, typed or handwritten. Each person is limited to one nomination and that nomination must include the full name, address, and phone number of both the nominee and the author of the letter. It should be mailed no later than Aug. 1 to Hidden Heroes Project, Box 619, Norway, Maine, 04268 or e-mailed to oxfordcountyfair.com.

Project organizers, fair directors, fair officers and their immediate families are exempt from participating,.

Fair officials said the nomination letters will be judged twice, first by an impartial committee who will narrow entries down to 40 finalists. The second committee of three judges from outside the county will select the final 25 out of 40 finalists.

Nomination forms are located throughout the county, including town offices or by writing The Hidden Heroes Project, Box 619, Norway, ME 04268.
