Firefighters extinguish flames at a home at 70 West Stoneham Road in Lovell on Monday morning. Homeowner James Walker, 64, was taken to Bridgton Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
LOVELL — A home at 70 West Stoneham Road was destroyed in an early-morning fire Monday.
Lovell fire Chief Tommie McKenzie said homeowner James Walker, 64, was the sole occupant. Stoneham Rescue transported Walker to Bridgton Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
McKenzie said Walker's pets haven't been seen yet.
James Miclon, director of the Oxford County Regional Communications Center, the homeowner reported waking up and finding the house filled with smoke.
The cause is under investigation, McKenzie said. He said the fire started in the back of an attached barn.
“We don't know if it's power related,” McKenzie said. A neighbor said Tropical Storm Irene knocked out power to the road.
McKenzie said Walker was running a generator, but it was in front of the house, far from where the fire started.
The call came in before 6 a.m. McKenzie said firefighters from the Saco Valley and Stoneham fire departments assisted the Lovell Fire Department at the scene. Down the road, tanker trucks drew water from Keewaydin Lake and trucked it to the fire.
The Sweden Fire Department provided coverage for Lovell while the department responded to the fire.
