Ozone alert issued today for coastal regions

AUGUSTA – With temperatures rising, ground-level ozone pollution is expected to reach unhealthy levels in coastal areas from Kittery to Acadia National Park today, according to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

Ozone pollution will likely be moderate for the rest of the state, including central Maine.

People suffering from respiratory diseases, such as asthma, and children and even healthy adults may experience reduced lung function and lung irritation. Symptoms that accompany reduced lung capacity include shortness of breath, coughing, throat irritation and uncomfortable chest sensations.

Experts recommend people protect their health during ozone alerts by avoiding strenuous activity, such as jogging or lawn-mowing, during midday.
