AUBURN — Park Avenue School’s third-grade Odyssey of the Mind team finished in first place at the state championship competition held on March 20 in Sanford.
The first-year Division I team, coached by Deb Charest, completed the Long-Term Problem: Discovered Treasures, competing against 10 other teams in grades three to five from Maine. The group now has the opportunity to participate in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Michigan State University.
At the finals, to be held from May 26 to 29, the team will compete against children from all over the world, including children from Mexico, Turkey, Germany and Hong Kong. The children are currently fundraising for the event through bottle drives, tagging, a yard sale and a spaghetti dinner.
They must raise $8,000 between now and mid-May. Donations, payable to “Auburn Schools OM Team,” may be sent to Park Avenue Elementary School, Attn: OM Team, 161 Park Ave., Auburn, ME 04210.
Any unused money will be held at the Auburn School Department for future winning Odyssey of the Mind teams to defray costs of traveling to World Finals.
