Parking issue addressed for Rumford's downtown construction

RUMFORD — Town Manager Linda-Jean Briggs advises that extra parking spaces are being made available while water, sewer and stormwater systems are replaced in the downtown business district this year.

Briggs said Friday that she contacted Catalyst Paper, which has given permission for the public to use the 50-plus parking spaces behind the American Legion Hall at the head on Congress Street.

The $5.4 million project began in April and is expected to wrap up by mid-November. The work includes replacing sidewalks on The Island, a mix of business and residential buildings.

Meanwhile, on-site inspector Gary Violette said Sargent Corp. of Bangor is wrapping installation of the new sewer main on Hartford and River streets and will head south on Congress Street with the new sewer main, which will mean one-lane traffic.
