AUBURN — Paul J. LaFlamme, 87, of 106 Russell St., Lewiston, died Saturday, April 24, in Auburn.
Born in Lewiston, on Jan. 4, 1923, he was the son of Joseph E. and Emilienne Richard LaFlamme. He was a graduate of Bates College, Lewiston and McGill University, School of Medicine, Montreal, Canada. After medical school he served in the U.S. Air Force. He completed a three-year residency at the Medical Center in Jersey City, N.J., was certified by the National Board of Internal Medicine and practiced internal medicine in Lewiston for over 40 years.
He was a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, a member of the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association, and past president of the Androscoggin County Medical Association. Dr. LaFlamme was chief of medicine for several years at St. Mary’s General Hospital, during which time he was instrumental in the establishment of the first coronary care unit (CCU) and first intensive care unit (ICU), and was later made chairman of the building committee for those units. He additionally served three terms as president of the medical staff. In 1950, he married Marion Sullivan of Elizabeth, N.J.; they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2000.
He is survived by five daughters, Donna LaFlamme and husband, Gary Nikolaus, of New Berlin, Wisc., Susan LaFlamme and husband, Randall Morse, of Delmar, N.Y., Janet LaFlamme of Windham, Laura Reynolds of Lewiston and Elaine LaFlamme and husband, Keith Cahall, of Sunrise, Fla.; and seven grandchildren, James Coolidge, David and Sarah Morse, Lynn and Grace Reynolds, and Hannah and Jack Cahall.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marion Sullivan LaFlamme.
