FRYEBURG – Police initially thought they were responding to a call for a pedestrian who had been struck and injured by a car, but found instead a 55-year-old Denmark man collapsed by the side of the road.
Police Chief Wayne Brooking said Wednesday, “A pedestrian was walking and had a medical emergency, but it was called in as a car/pedestrian accident.”
Because police had not managed to make contact with the injured man’s family by 4 p.m., they would not release his name.
The man collapsed near Osgood Brothers Inc. on Route 302 shortly after 11 a.m.
Fryeburg Rescue took the man to Bridgton Hospital for treatment.
Brooking did not know the condition of the man.
State police were taking over the case because the man lives in Denmark.
A state trooper pinned a note to the front door to alert family members about what happened later in the afternoon.
