Pedestrian hit by car on Park Street

LEWISTON – A 72-year-old Lewiston man was seriously injured after he was struck by a car Sunday night while trying to cross Park Street.

According to Lewiston Police Lt. Jim Minkowsky, Russell Kenney of 353 Lisbon St. was walking from Kennedy Park and heading toward the parking lot of Simones around 9:10 p.m. when he was hit by a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Driving the SUV was Khadar Yassin, 49, of 195 Eden Hill Drive, Portland.

Yassin was given an intoxication test and questioned at the police station following the accident, Minkowsky said.

“It’s just protocol,” Minkowsky said of the test. “We’re still investigating, but so far, there’s nothing suspicious about it.”

An accident reconstructionist was also called to the scene as a precaution because of Kenney’s age and the impact of the collision, Minkowsky said.

“He was thrown a good distance, approximately 10 feet, from the point of impact,” Minkowsky said.

Kenney was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where he was still being evaluated late Sunday night.

A nursing supervisor at the hospital reported that Kenny was in serious condition.

When police arrived to the scene, Kenney was unconscious, but still breathing, said Minkowsky. Kenney regained consciousness moments after police and medical personnel arrived, he added.
