FRYEBURG – The man who collapsed by the side of the road in Fryeburg last Wednesday died most likely from natural causes stemming from heart disease, a state official said Friday.

Daniel Huggard, 55, had been walking along Route 302 in Fryeburg near Osgood Brothers Inc. when he fell. A driver passing by reported to dispatch that a pedestrian had been struck by a car shortly after 11 a.m., which caused some initial confusion.

Police responded to the scene and surmised that Huggard had not been injured, but did need prompt medical attention. The Fryeburg police chief drove him in a Fryeburg Rescue ambulance to Bridgton Hospital.

A hospital official said Huggard died before he reached the emergency room.

The Maine Medical Examiner’s Office had not announced the official reason of death by Friday, but a spokeswoman said Huggard’s family told the examiner that Huggard suffered from a known heart condition.

Fryeburg police said Huggard, who lived in Denmark, is survived by his wife.
