Perley J. Childs Jr.


LEWISTON – Perley J. Childs Jr., 64, of 324 Lewiston St., Mechanic Falls, died Wednesday, July 4, at Central Maine Medical Center after a very short illness.

He was born in Portland, on May 2, 1943, the son of Perley J. Sr. and Thelma (Whittier) Childs.

He was self-employed in the trucking and hauling business his whole life. He was a very Christian man who believed in helping others and was an avid Oxford Plains Speedway racing fan.

He is survived by his wife, the former Christine Berry Childs of Mechanic Falls whom he married on Oct. 27, 2006; four sons, Perley C., and his wife, Kerrie Childs, of Auburn, Jesse J. Childs, and his companion, Laura Labbe, of Poland, Mark T., and his wife, Jody Childs, of Mechanic Falls and David L., and his wife, Mary Childs, of Oxford; three daughters, Rose A. and Robert Scammon of Brunswick, Sandra A., and her husband, Edward Pemberton, of Sabattus and Pamela Alexander of New Orleans, La.; two brothers, William, and his wife, Nancy Childs, of Leeds and Guy, and his wife, Linda Childs, of Turner; four sisters, Sandra Fitzgerald of Leeds, Virginia, and her husband, Moe Blackwell, of Lisbon, Josephine, and her husband, Joseph Gower, of Lisbon and Brenda, and her husband, Dexter O’Neil, of Turner; 27 grandchildren, Heather Holbrook, Robert Jr., Ashley Scammon, Kate Stanley, Kendra Wilson, Kailee, Cody, Kasee, Katheryn, Kaden Childs, Matt Mahar, Eric O’Conner, Christopher, Jami, Megan Childs, Kimberly, Benton, Andrew Labbe, Curtis Cook, Mark Childs Jr., Misty Grant, Nicole Rowe, Dustin LaPlante, Joshua and Zachary Childs, Iris and Kara Alexander; seven great-grandchildren, Izzabelle Holbrook, Connor Stanley, Kelsi, Kielie, Paytyn LaPlante, Taylor Benton, Nayome Snowdeal, and two more on the way.

He was predeceased by his sister, Katherine Colby; and his first wife, the former Pauline Fournier Childs, who died in 2001.
