Peru graduate awarded scholarship

RUMFORD – Heather Stone of Peru was selected as the Dirigo High School student for the 2007 Joyce B. Roy Scholarship from Rumford Group Homes Inc. Annually, Rumford Group Homes awards scholarships to a student at Mountain Valley High School and to a student at Dirigo High School in Dixfield.

The scholarship is awarded to a student who plans to continue his or her education after high school graduation. “The scholarships are intended to honor the memory of Joyce B. Roy, who was one of the founding board members of Rumford Group Homes Inc.” said Nicholas Waugh, president of the board of directors. “Mrs. Roy was dedicated to the mission of serving children, adolescents and families and helping them improve their futures,” he said.

Stone is a 2007 Dirigo graduate. Stone studied business management and took core classes from the “college preparatory track.” She also took coursework through the University of Maine at Augusta.

Extracurricular activities included involvement in Big Brothers Big Sisters during all four years of high school. She was a three-year member of Voices Changing Choices, the Interact Club, Teens with a Purpose and the Recreation Committee to make a teen center.

Stone is the daughter of Andela Barkhouse of Peru and Lincoln Stone of Dixfield. She will attend Husson College in Bangor to pursue a degree in business management with an accounting emphasis.
