Pest management workshop, exam planned for farmers


LEWISTON — A pest management workshop will be held Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the Ramada Inn on Pleasant Street. The workshop is open to all farmers interested in taking the Pesticide Exam and offers four credits. Preregistration is required by Monday, Feb. 13.

The cost is $15 per person. Sign in begins at 9 a.m. The morning topics will cover pest management basics and vegetable and fruit integrated pest management; organic pest management; manual and chemical control of forest pests and pesticide applicator licensing and chemigation. The afternoon will cover pesticide risks, toxicity and exposure for organic and conventional growers; pesticide storage, safety and emergency planning; producer perspectives on integrated pest management and applicable programs.

At about 2:45 p.m. the pesticide exam will be offered.

In case of a storm event requiring a cancellation, the workshop will be held the next day at the same time and location. Anyone with special needs in order to attend should contact Jane Heikkinen at 753-9400, ext. 400.

The Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District is partnering with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, University of Maine Cooperative Extension, Maine Department of Agriculture and the Maine Forest Service of the Maine Department of Conservation to conduct this series of workshops.
