Pine Tree Composition has new owner

LEWISTON – Pine Tree Composition Inc. was recently acquired by Laserwords Inc., a large international software/composition company. They sought Pine Tree because they wanted to add a qualified, reputable U.S. presence to expand their growing capabilities in the book production market. Already No. 2 two in the industry, Laserwords is planning to expand.

Pine Tree Composition was started by Jim MacDonald and Luther Child in 1973 in the Hill Mill building in Lewiston. Originally a linotype composition shop, they have produced books for publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Prentice-Hall, McGraw-Hill, Houghton Mifflin, Addison Wesley and Pearson Education.

They moved from the Hill Mill location to the Pepperell Mill on Lisbon Street in 1980. Then in 1986, with the help of the Lewiston Economic Growth Council, they built their own building in the Lewiston Industrial Park on Forrestal Street.

Laserwords Inc. has signed a long-term lease at its present location in Lewiston and plans to keep all current employees and add more in the future. The company expects to continue its growth under the new acquisition.
