Pirates fall to Devils, 3-2

LOWELL, Mass (AP) – Barry Tallackson intercepted a pass and blasted a slap shot inside the left post at 4:18 of overtime to lift the Lowell Devils to a 3-2 victory over the Portland Pirates on Saturday.

The tiebreaker overshadowed the two-assist performance of 40-year-old Portland Eric Weinrich. He was playing his second game after leaving the bench as an assistant coach and returning to the ice.

Geoff Peters scored both goals for Portland (20-18-2-5). Chris Minard scored a goal and added an assist for Lowell (21-20-3-1). The Pirates were down 2-0 and pulled to within a goal when Peters scored on a 40-foot shot with under a minute left in the second period. He tied it 2-2 at 4:51 of the third.

Dov Grumet-Morris made 27 saves for Portland. Doyle had 20.

Andy Greene scored in the first period and Minard doubled Lowell’s lead in the second.
