Pirates pillage Bruins


PORTLAND (AP) – Jani Hurme notched a shutout and Zenon Konopka scored two goals as the Portland Pirates trounced the Providence Bruins 6-0 Thursday in their first game of the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs.

Maxim Kondratiev scored a goal and added four assists in the contest; Ryan Shannon and Dustin Penner also had a pair of assists.

The Pirates (1-0) took command early, scoring four goals in the first period: Simon Ferguson at 4:23, Kent Huskins at 6:43, Kondratiev at 13:09 and Curtis Glencross at 18:36.

Konopka made it 5-0 at 14:09 of the second period and closed the scoring at 8:08 of the third.

The Bruins (0-1) were stymied in the first period, registering only one shot on goal in the first nine minutes. Hurme totaled 19 saves.
