Pirates tame Wolfpack


HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – J.B. Bittner’s goal midway through the third period turned out to be the game-winner as the Portland Pirates beat the Hartford Wolf Pack 5-3 Friday night in the American Hockey League.

Bittner’s score at the 11:21 mark put Portland (49-18-5-3) up 4-2. Dustin Penner added an insurance goal with an empty-netter with 17 seconds remaining after Hartford pulled goalie Al Montoya for the extra attacker.

Geoff Peters’ goal at 8:02 of the third put the Pirates up 3-2.

Hartford (44-23-2-6) pulled to within 4-3 when Brad Smyth scored with 3:12 remaining in the game.

Zenon Konopka and Garett Bembridge added goals for Portland, while Lauri Korpikoski and Alexandre Giroux had Hartford’s other scores.

Jani Hurme stopped 28 shots for the Pirates, and Montoya finished with 29 saves.
