JAY — From haiku to cinquain, fourth-graders at Jay Middle School impressed their parents and friends with a variety of poems from their own collections on Thursday.

After working hard to learn styles of poetry, the students presented their first Poetry Cafe to a packed cafeteria of family members.

Teachers Donna Labbe, Nancy Anctil and Tammy Deering work as a team with parents, Labbe said as she welcomed the audience.

Poetry subjects ranged from baseball to cats, from the color blue to moose and from mice to hogs as each student stated the style of poetry and read a short piece.

The students have also been studying states and sang a song, “Fifty Nifty States,” before individually standing behind boards for each state. The boards highlighted interesting facts about each state that the students have researched.
