Polar Bears bounced from winner’s bracket Women’s lacrosse

BRUNSWICK – Middlebury jumped ahead with runs in each of the first three innings to grab an 8-1 lead and held on for a 12-10 win against Bowdoin in the winner’s bracket of the NESCAC Tournament on Saturday.

The Polar Bears rallied to scored three times in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 8-4. Ricky Leclerc doubled to score Jared Lemieux and later scored on a single by Nick Lawler.

The squads each scored twice in the fourth frame, and Middlebury added two more in the seventh to make it a 12-6 game. But the Polar Bears fought back, scoring three times in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Leclerc and RBI hits from Joe Berte and Lawler to cut the gap to 12-9. A Jon Lawrie double scored Chris McCann to make it 12-10 in the eighth, but Panthers reliever Christian Hansen retired Bowdoin in order to seal the win.

Third-baseman Chris Bucci went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Bowdoin to a 5-2 victory over Williams in the first round earlier Saturday.

Maine 20, Hartford 4

ORONO – Joe Hough went 2-for-3 with two home runs three runs scored and four RBIs to lead the University of Maine to a 20-4 victory over Hartford.

Ryan Quintal added a pair of hits and a game-high seven RBIs, while Brian Hackett went 3-for-5 and scored four runs for Maine (28-16-1). Starting pitcher Scott Robinson scattered three hits to earn his eighth victory.

Catcher Chris Hebert hit a two-run homer for Hartford (10-36).

Women’s lacrosse
Bowdoin 11, Colby 8

MIDDLEBURY – Bowdoin advanced to the NCAA regional final for the second straight year with an 11-8 victory over Colby.

Colby led 2-1 early before Bowdoin went on a 3-0 run to take a 4-2 lead with 16:02 remaining in the first half. Jena Davis scored a pair of goals during the run.

Colby scored three of the next four goals to tie the game at five with 1:17 left in the half, but Kate Donoghue scored with six seconds remaining to give the Polar Bears a 7-6 advantage.

Colby tied the game early in the second half before Bowdoin scored the next five goals.

Davis led Bowdoin with three goals, while Donoghue and Bobbi Dennison each scored two.

The Polar Bears will face Middlebury in the regional final Sunday at 1 p.m.
