Police clarify bicycle accident

FARMINGTON — Farmington Police clarified an initially suspected hit-and-run accident between a bicyclist and a vehicle Monday on the Lucy Knowles Road following their investigation.

Riding his bike south on Whittier Road, Jonah Jones, 15, of Farmington came off the Whittier Road onto the Lucy Knowles Road and ran into the passenger door of a 2002 Ford Taurus driven by Kenneth Harnden, 63, of Vienna, said department secretary Bonnie Pomeroy.

Harnden did stop and ask Jones if he was OK, but instead, proceeded to drive to Farmington to find the police station and report the incident, Pomeroy said. He was given wrong directions and in the mean time Jones, who received minor cuts and scratches, hopped on his bike and rode off only to be stopped when the chain broke.

He apparently told people, who stopped, that he had just hit a car and calls escalated to a hit-and-run accident with police searching for the driver, she said.

Harnden was charged with failure to provide information at an accident, said Police officer Kim Bates on Monday.
