WILTON — A police cruiser that responded to a vehicle fire early Sunday morning was damaged after a fire truck backed into it.
A 1999 Dodge Caravan caught fire at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday at 264 Route 2 West after Todd Stevens, owner of a small garage at the site, left the vehicle running to warm it up, said Police Chief Dennis Brown. Stevens had previously been working on the vehicle.
No one was in the vehicle and no one was injured, he said. The incident remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office although it’s not suspicious, he said.
Wilton Fire Department and police responded to the scene. A fire truck driver did not see a Wilton police cruiser and accidentally backed into the vehicle causing quite a bit of damage, estimated to total at least $3,000.
It was one of the older cruisers but it will be out of commission until it’s repaired, he said.
