Police look into charges in day care closing

CHESTER, N.H. (AP) – Police say they are investigating the abrupt closing four months ago of a day care center.

Chief Alfred Wagner said several parents have complained that owners of the Children’s Exploratorium accepted payment for the entire month of December, then closed in the first week, with less than 12 hours’ notice.

The owner, Lauren Hammond, said she had to close because of a conflict with the landlord and that she was moving the business to North Carolina.

The chief said depending on the amounts of money involved, the case could be a felony. And he said charges could be filed against the business, the owner, or both.

He says he’s already spoken with three parents who claim they have been defrauded, and plans to speak with more.
