LEWISTON — Local police officers are planning to pedal their bicycles to Augusta on Thursday to memorialize their fallen comrades during National Police Week.
The riders are scheduled to gather at Androscoggin Bank Colisee at 190 Birch St. at 7 a.m., and depart by 7:30 a.m. for the 35-mile ride to the Maine Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial on State Street in Augusta, near the State House, for an 11 a.m. event.
The Lewiston Police Department is expected to have two pickup trucks and a command vehicle to support the bicyclists and bring them back to Lewiston after the ceremony.
The group is planning to ride past Central Maine Medical Center on Main Street to pay tribute to the late Fryeburg Police Officer Nathan Desjardins, who died there in May 2017 after rescuing a Berwick woman whose canoe had capsized on the Saco River.
During Desjardins’ hospitalization, local police provided his family with lodging and meals.
